Sayhi2steve
 Awesome my Marleri Julies have paired and spawned. They are spawning every week or so and having about 20 or 30 fry each time have several fry now varying in size from 2 to 5mmSorry to bore you all just wanted to share as this is all new to me and am enjoying watching them guard and look after there fry instead of them eating them or abandoning which seems to happen with most other fish. carla
Hi Steve, Are these called Julidochromis marlieri in Latin? Just trying to learn the english names! Thanks.

Kriber
Hi Steve, Good work on the Marliers I've got 2 (as opposed to a couple) myself. What are the conditions in the tank like regarding water parameters other fish etc These fish have to be the most manoeuvrable fish I know, they sometimes just swim above my Kribs where they remain out of harms way Do you know if wiggling ones body like your've got cramp in front of another Marlier is submissive or maybe courtship behaviour? All the best for the fry Kriber

Sayhi2steve
Hi Kriber sorry I posted a reply but I must have stuffed it up as its not there. The water conditions are as follows pH is about 7.5 i know this is low for tangs but thats what they were in when I brought them so thats what I've left them at. The hardness is just tap hardness which is about 100caco3. And the wriggling sounds familiar thats what mine were up to a week or so before my fry appeared. Sorry bout the late replky again
Sayhi2steve
Hi Andrew. Fry seem to be doing well so far so will keep that in mind how many were you and your friend after???
Kriber
Thanks Steve My pH is approx 7.4, but the marliers I got were locally bred in similar water the LFS's told me. The hardness is just tap hardness which is about 100caco3. What does this mean generally? my water is quite soft, I've never tried to get a handle on what values equal what hardness under the varying ways of describing it, is 100CaCO3 quite soft? I dont know the age, or sex of my 2 marliers, one is approx 3cm and the other is maybe 5cm. I haven't observed the 'wiggling' for a while (the small one was doing it to the big one) and the larger one chases the smaller one away quite often. so I don't think their 'mates' What sizes are your pair? Keep up the good work Kriber
ajbroome
Sayhitosteve said... > ... how many were you and your friend after??? If the price was right I'd probably take a dozen. Happy to swap for some killies Andrew.
Sayhi2steve
Hi kriber the only reason I know the hardness is that I got the local concil to send me a water parameters read out. If you ring yours they would probably do the same for you. I think that 100 caco3 is reasonably soft but I'm the same as you, I'm only just starting to learn about these things as I have to now that I'm starting to set a malawi tank. My pair are as follows. Female well so I've been told is about 7cm and the male is only little at about 4cm but thats how it works with these fish the females are the larger ones. They are dam near impossible to sex unless you vent them and I dont know much about doing that so its just hope for the best. I brought 5 fish from my lfs and I've had them for about two years now so it took a while befroe they were comfortable enough to breed. Also putting in lots of rockwork for them helped I think as they live in amongst in the wild and feel comfortable with caves etc to hide in. Hope this helps. brocky05
Hi Steve In regards to your comments on sexing these fish it is not that hard but if the fish are of similar age the male will be the larger of the two and just prior to his anal fin you should see what looks like a piece of fin seperated from the rest of the finand he should with age get the typical hump that some tanganyikancichlids get. You are right about the rocks in the tank the more the better with lots of holes in and out also preferably with sand as a substrate. Hope this is helpful. Sayhi2steve
Have heard differing reports on which is bigger the male or the female seems to be a 50/50 split from info on the ineternet. Will have to check for the fin detail that brock05 mentioned as I am still confused as to which of mine is male and female as not sure if they are the same ages. :-? Kriber
Cheers Steve I'm not serious about breeding marliers (at the monent at least) as I havent even got my Kribs to breed successfully yet. Thanks for the info nonetheless. Kriber
Sayhi2steve
Speaking of Kribs I brought a pair yesterday, and man are they hot to trot. The female is showing off and arching to the male and they are both having convulsions at each other they are funny to watch. I think they are ready to spawn as the females belly is as rosy as and she just keeps on showing off to the male who gives her a little peck when she does. So may have some Krib fry soon also. Have heard that the first spawn usally doesnt end up with any fry though, as they are still learning.
