Hamish
We have a 3foot planted neon tank, and over time ive had all sorts of problems but this one has me stumped. awhile ago i have a neon come up with this small white lump on the lower part of it's mouth (it's lip, i guess.) it grew, very very slowley.. no other fish seemed to get it. at first (being white, and at the time very minute) i thought whitespot. so i treated it, which done nothing after a few months it got larger, and then i noticed it on another fish by this time the first victum started too loose it's colouring (very badly) and looked anorexic (spelling), so i flushed em. anyway another then got the problem, and now about 5 do ive tried tonic/melifex/salt, raising temp/regular water changes/ new filter medium a friend of mine suggested TB, but i really have no idea. all i know is that it grow's really slow (the white cyst on the lip) then the fish eventually looses its colour, goes skinny then that's as far as i let it get. if i can sort out a digicamera it would help with a few photo's, but untill then if anyone know's what may be causing this problem we'd love to know thanks! livebearer_breeder
Description suggests to me cotton mouth or Mouth Fungus. Symptoms: White cottony patches around the mouth. It is actually caused from the bacterium Chondrococcus columnaris. It shows up first as a grey or white line around the lips and later as short tufts sprouting from the mouth like fungus. The toxins produced and the inability to eat will be fatal unless treated at an early stage. Penicillin at 10,000 units per litre is a very effective treatment. Treat with a second dose in two days. Or use chloromycetin, 10 to 20 mg per litre, with a second dose in two days. Shae
livebearer_breeder
I think there is also a shelf bought pharmaceutical, called something along the lines of ‘anti-septic’, it’s in a small black bottle, $5.95 from Animates. alanmin4304
It would be pretty hard to get chloromyceton these days I think. They try to restrict its use so it will remain effective against cholera. I don't know about the white around the mouth but colour fading in neons (especialy blue) is usually neon disease (plistophoria) treated with formaldehyde and TB symptoms are wasting away, treated with antibiotics. Both treatments are pretty inefective.
Alan
Yep Alan, both of those are treated the same way by me. BANG, on the floor Alan NZKA
livebearer_breeder
If you read carefully, he says that the Mouth Fungus started first. Which means it is highly unlikely to be Tuberculosis; I personally doubt it was neon disease as well. IF all those infected, or dead, have Mouth Fungus. As Mentioned, “short tufts sprouting from the mouth like fungus, the toxins produced and the inability to eatâ€. Shae
alanmin4304
You may be correct but it was descrbed as a small white lump and a cyst. Columnaris is usually more like cotton wool than a lump, hence the name.
Hamish
cheer's for the comment's. it may very well be this cotton mouth fungus, but from what i can see it really looks like a white lump, not really "cotton" looking at all. looks more like a pimple, i guess.. just a white cyst that grows slowley. maybe i should treat it for this cotton mouth fungi anyway? would this be recomended? and if so, would it harm my plants? thank's again a heap for all the comment's and feedback
alanmin4304
It depends what you treat it with. You could use Furan from the pet shop. Most antibiotics are expensive and you need to get them from a vet. Furan should not damage your plants
