hansen tank fitting

i figure people here were most likely to know, what is the hansen fitting you all use on the hole in your glass.

That is the very first piece. I'm looking to have 3 tanks one above another and have them overflowing into each other and the a fluval 403 to pump back up to the top.

I had a look at bunnings and my local building shop but nothing quite right. Any help would be great.

I went to mico pipelines and the guy had no idea what a bulkhead was. I explained to him that it was to create a seal around a hole in a fish tank for a pipe connection, I then showed him a picture on the internet on his computer - and he still didnt know what I was talking about. :o

I eventually found them myself, and he said they were for piping out of water tanks.

I got a 1 1/4 inch one for around $8 I think.

How do you connect these things to pvc?

then he shouldnt be working there. tank valve is another name for them i think. bulkhead is the yank terminology.

The words "Bulkhead Fitting" is really a term used by Boatbuilders for the adaptor that passes through the hull to allow cooling water to enter.. and surplus water to be pumped out.

The old water tank makers (galvanized).. adopted this word for the fitting that passed through the wall of the tank.

Don't know about the Americans.. but it is a general term used in the UK.

You can make your own fitting by using a threaded barrel nipple and two flange nuts.. simple as :)

Bill.

"Hansen Tank Fittings"

Bought mine from Mico in Rosedale Rd (for $7.93 each) area near HFF.

Also bought different parts of Hansen fittings from Mitre 10 Glenfield, Westgate, Lincoln Rd.

Bunnings have very limited amount available and I don't even recall whether Placemakers have them.

I have just gone through this exact exercise and I can say this from having made several mistakes:

Mico or Mastertrade are the best and cheapest places to get the bulkheads, also called bungs. You are always better to go with larger fittings and then reduce if you have to. It is a lot harder to go larger if you need to. To connect the bung to tygon (clear flexible) tubing, you need a female-female thread coupling and then screw in a nipple fitting. To connect it to PVC you screw on a female-pipe couple and then glue your pvc on. Of course, if you go with the larger bung and it is too much, you can screw a ball valve right on to the bung and then screw on your nipple or male-pvc couple, depending on what you will use for pipe. You can get all of this at any plumbing trade supply like Mico or Mastertrade.

I hope this helps more than confuses.
