debs01
Ok, have had my goldfish tank set up since April, since July I have had it cycling wonderfully, doing weekly changes etc. I test ph, but nothing else. I have noticed that in the last 3 weeks my tank has had a green tint, have done more changes etc, but it still has the green tint????????? Any ideas appreciated, I dont use algae rid or any chemicals at all??
alanmin4304
Your goldfish will love it.
Caryl
Probably algae. Any plants in the tank? A result of phosphates building up most likely and possibly more light on the tank as summer approaches. Add more plants, reduce feeding, keep up water changes. livebearer_breeder
Or just do what i do, and clean the green off the tank. Simple Shae
debs01
I do have real plants in the tank but I have noticed the water being a bit warmer?! I live in Central Otago and its a lot hotter these days. Would that have anything to do with it???
Caryl
It will do Debs. Keep an eye on the fish as oxygen levels will drop. If you see them at the surface a lot, increase aeration. (Green water is green water, not green tank Shae.)
Wok
If you can lay your hands on some water sprite or indian fern, both of these plants are very good at absorbing extra nutrients and clears green water quite nicely..... so I have read in the TFH magazine
Caryl
That is because they grow so fast wok.
debs01
So I need to get those plants to clear up the tank???????????
Wok
It definitely won't hurt Debs
Caryl
It will help. Something to compete against the algae. The plants will use up the nutrients required by the algae so starve it.
debs01
Ok cool, any ideas where I can get these plants from?????? I live in rural central otago
Caryl
They are commonly sold as 'bunch plants'. Do a Google so you know what they look like then visit your lfs. Hygrophila grows fast too.
Feelers
Might be overkill but UV would fix it. I like the idea of uv, although obviously the price makes it somewhat less attractive than adding some plants.
alanmin4304
It is a while since I have use UV, but the penetration through water is not good and the penetration through green water is decidedly bad. It will also kill a lot of bugs that are actually beneficial. There are more good bugs out there than bad.
