Feelers
Some really cool videos of cuttlefish and other things - an angler fish devouring stuff. Does anyone know of cuttlefish in New Zealand waters? I have heard that they are around, but not sure about it. http://www.stickycricket.com/aquarium/movies/index.html The angler video and imperial march vids are real cool, and flamboyant cuttlefish looks real weird
ghostface
omg how cool is that flamboyant? gee, i wonder if he's reef safe
Feelers
You can keep them in a reef tank, but without stinging things like zoos. They will eat all the livestock aswell. And apparently they dont like bright lights, so it has to be low light corals too. What does reef safe mean exaclty, the whole reef as in fish too? It would be great just watching them devour hundreds of dollars worth of fish. Has anyone even thought if keeping an angler fish? The one on the video is obviously a tropical one, it looks super evil.
wasp
That's great Feelers! That octopus ones good! Shows how much our own attitudes have changed since then also. Anybody know how to download those files & keep them?
Pies
Cuttlefish get quite large. They are cool and very itelligent. Even seen those white things they put in bird cages? The things that birds peck to keep their beaks in shape? Well thats cuttlefish cartlidge. I've seen them in aquairums, not sure about their suitablitly in an aquairum, I suspect that if they were good candidates then someone would have them. The only Aquairum i've seen them at is Sydney and Townsville. Are they in NZ waters? No. Pie
HelifaxNZ
A guy I worked with used to fish for squid from the wharf at Rakino and managed to catch a fair few.
Pies
There are not documented as being found in NZ waters. Pie

HelifaxNZ
Well they were either baby squid or cuttle. Not exactly sure which one.
Brianemone
squid are common but ive never heard of cuttle fish in NZ
Pies
Baby squid look exactly like squid, but smaller. Baby cuttle fish look exactly like cuttlefish, except smaller. How about some robot fish? http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~jliua/videogal.htm Pie
suphew
I read that cuttle fish have to be kept in tall round tanks, which makes them pretty impactical for home tanks. Its something to do with the cornings confusing them and stressing them to death
Feelers
My friend from the far north said that while diving he saw what he described as a cuttlefish, but I cant remember which place it was, possibly 3 kings, poor knights islands. One of those two places I think. http://www.tonmo.com/cephcare/cephcarejump.php Has the basics required. You can keep cuttlefish in an aquarium relativly easily apparently. Many of the problems of them dieing comes from lack of information, which is much less of a problem now than it used to be. They are best in a species only reef tank, and they have some speical requirements, primarily with food. All their food should be marine, primarily crustaceans. Breeding them has been done, but it's difficult apparently, http://www.stickycricket.com/cuttle/bandensis.html Written by one of the guys on tonmo who is trying to breed them. A On the cephalopod related topic I'm trying to get a job through the giant squid guy who was on Holmes and 60mins - Steve O Shea. I managed to talk to him in a chatroom on tonmo.com ,and hopefully I can a job possibly looking after one of his projects maybe. It would be very cool, he's the man!!! How bizzare are those robotic fish? They swim really well, and its amazing they dont crash into the glass as would be expected.
HelifaxNZ
Woudn't a round tank like that make them go blind??? Or shouldn't I go there???
Jeroen
If you want to download and keep the movies then after downloading check your 'temporary internet folder'. Sort it on size and most likely the biggest one is it (unless you download heaps of movies). Just copy this file and save it where you would like it. Intime internet explorer will overwrite it. I have once seen a small octopus here at the coast in New Plymouth. Fascinating how they move from hiding place to hiding place and change colour and shape all the time. Would love to sea more of them.

One of those two places I think. Like I said, no one has documented cuttlefish in NZ including Poor Knights, 3 Kings and the Kermadecs. Documented are Lionfish, some juv tangs, turtles, but no cuttlefish. I am sure MAF/DOC would be interested to know if it is a new undescribed species living in NZ waters. wasp
Thanks Jeroen, useful first post! I searched it and found it, pasted to my desktop and played to some people a couple of times, but now if I try to play it it freezes the computer Oh well, guess I'm just not technical enough. Feelers
So pies wouldnt that mean that your lionfish is legal? As you collected it locally
Pies
So pies wouldnt that mean that your lionfish is legal? As you collected it locally Depends. Pertrois Violitans are listed as uncommon at the Kermidecs and Extremely Rare (1 documented case) in the Poor Knights, which are both Marine Reserves. Feelers
Not on the topic of cuttlefish, but a very cool/weird video of "magic sand". http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/533 ... _Sand.html Perhaps another option for a faux sand bed? haha Salt water might screw it up but who knows.
