The NZ expert, the guy whos obsessed with squid(Steve O Shea) who comments at the bottom of that article is practicing his squid rearing (they are incredibly difficult to keep) to prepare for another archyteuthis infant that he hopes this time will be able to grow to full size.

He has a live web cam you can control and look around the squid tank(not archyteuthis but deep sea ones I think)

they are pretty small but they grow real fast

There is a Giant Squid on display at the National Aquarium in Napier

Dead Of Course)

Steve O'Shea gave a talk there a while back about the squid

According to Steve,The most frustrating thing you can do is try to raise the squid, apparently they would not survive in a square sided container, die within seconds of being placed in one, put them in a round container and they would last quite some time, cant remember exactly how long but it sure beat a couple of seconds.

Very interesting guy with heaps of passion for his job

BTW, I saw that Holmes show as well

You are right Bruce about the squid not surviving in square tanks its amazing to watch them drop like flys . They do well in large deep O bins. The biggest problem with rearing squid or any cephlapod is food. They need copepods and there is a lack of information about a successful methodology. Steve has and had a number of attempts at rearing from eggs unsuccessfully along with others. Great guy, passionate environmentalist.
