Man Made Rocks

I found this one which uses argonite sand. Would cost the same to buy rock in NZ.

I was also thinking of using volcanic rock. Heaps of them around Mangere Bridge. I thought I could drill them to create an open structure and they are porous so should be great for bacterial growth.

hows this for man made rock,

its ceramic painted, its expensive but it does not hold po4 etc, can get in any size.

Just a thought - if it doesn't hold PO4 does that mean its not porous and therefore not very good at filtration either ? Is there any more info linked to that pic which might address this question ?

I would say that it is not good as your main filtration due to not being porous.

You could mixed it with rock or place some rocks in your sump.
