Anyway, today, I finally found it, there is a kind of snail graveyard on top of the grate on my overflow. I've pulled them all out now, could have easily been a hundred of them. Amazing how much smell even one dead snail can make. Can't have been doing the water much good either. It will be on my list of regular jobs now!
