misnoma
Couple of questions for the ASW people on the forum. From what I've read, it seems (in the US at least) they recommend RO/DI water when making up ASW. What do people use here - are filters of that sort commonly available? or do you get them off the net etc? Are there other options to achieve the same result? (seems the big thing is a 0 Phosphate reading/less algae worries) Also.. good places to get marine salt from, and recommended brands? I would have been keen to use NSW, however my lack of towbar/trailer, and living on the 8th floor makes such things a bit tricky initially
lduncan
I use Red Sea salt mainly, $200 for 40kg box. Down here in ChCh our tap water is pretty good (good enough for me) so we don't usually bother with RO/DI, but with the crap water in Auck, you really should use RO/DI. Chimera posted a place to get these units from in Auck not so long ago. Check the sticky at the top of the page, it probably has the place listed. puttputt
i should be using DI filters but don't. Just using my tank water that reads zero for phosphate and nitrate on my test kits (same as my tank). I do plan to use DI though.

Ira
I'm seriously considering going to ASW. I'm getting sick of not being able to do water changes because every time the tides are convenient it RAINS!
petplanet
I use Instant Ocean and tap water. Auckland water is pretty damn good. You can't compare it to US water. Sure go for the filter if the $$$ and desire are there but with fish only I don't think there will be a difference. Anyone done a phosphate test on the Auckland tap water? Oh, and we sell 20kg's for $119.95 +$5 if you want it delivered.
Ira
How many liters does 20KG of salt make? Hmmm, Let's see, how much does NSW cost me...It's about an 80 K round trip, so about $10 diesel, takes maybe 2 hours and I can get about 180 liters a trip. So that's $.18 per liter. The salt, if it makes about 700 liters it's the same price per liter of water. I think I have a couple 5 kg boxes that are good for a, iirc, about 200L each. So 20kg would be good for 800? reef
20kg/ about 800L
Ira
I should probably add an RO filter to the cost of ASW, though I'm half planning on getting one anyway as soon as I figure out how I'm going to plumb it. I'm hoping it will help get rid of the hair algae growing on my back glass. I'm kind of undecided whether I want to try and plumb it inline with the line to the hot water cylinder's header tank. I'm not sure if it'd be more than I'd need or not. The other option is plumbing it maybe in the sleepout with a really long hose running to the gutter for the wastewater so it'd trickle back to the rainwater tank from there or a hose all the way back to the rainwater tank. Anyone have any comments on those ideas?
petplanet
20kg makes 600 litres. 18 cents a litre is good. Do you want to work for me if your time is worth nothing.
