misnoma
okay.. I have an aqua one 5' tank (370Lish) that currently has cichlids in it.. and I'm kinda wondering whether it might be time to try something else for this tank. It's got an inbuilt filter (sits on the top) which I was planning not to use unless necessary, or to hold rowaphos/carbon/whatever/etc if needed - definitely not as a biological filter So.. for keeping just fish/live rock, I'm guessing a skimmer would still be good, seems DeepBlue have WeiPro hang on ones for not too much. So.. guess the question is, since I can't really run a sump on this tank or drill it without all sorts of fun, for a FLOWR tank, would the skimmer+live rock +some powerheads for flow etc provide enough filtration to keep the tank "cycled" as such? I don't mind the heater being in the display tank (can hide it I'm sure).
cracker
No problem, so long as your skimmer is efficient enough. You WILL need lots of live rock though to harbour nitrifying bacteria, probably at least half the litreage of the tank.
chimera
with a FOWLR a top-rated skimmer is not so crucial as fish can handle higher levels of nitrates than corals. weipro should be sufficient. however you want to ensure your filtration is good enough to keep unwanted algae to a minimum - but perhaps not so minimum your fish have nothing to graze on! misnoma
So some kind of mechanical filter as well as skimmer? Basically the idea is to not have a sump - because that in the lounge would be bad
Brianemone
no problem with having a sump in the lounge, im going to have mine in the lounge, westy1 has one of the quietest tanks around and his sump is under the tank in his lounge
misnoma
Yeah, but that would mean replacing the stand that's there ( aqua one supplied)... I'm trying to keep the partner happy whilst starting into this scene
Brianemone
no reason you cant have a sump in the cabinet, might need to cut some holes but you can do it. you dont need a sump but make sure you can get to your equiptment with out moving rocks or stuff
chimera
you can still be stealthy without a sump. just plan it well and buy equipment with the smallest footprint possible
tel
i checked out a weirpro hangon or in sump skimmer (dual use) at hollywood mt roskill.i want one to hang on my small tank before i go bigger and put one in a sump.return section that hangs over only measures 70mm which is good as i dont need to butcher the plastic tank cover/ light unit.prob similar issues with the ar and hr type tanks also.will be a good option if weirpro are any good?
