Acid Sea

I watched an interesting piece in the midday news today, not sure if it was on again at night.

There were some lovely reef shots, but the news was bad. Apparently the sea is becoming acid. The reason is that Co2 in the air is increasing, we actually have 20% more Co2 in the air than we did 50 years ago. This is soaking into the sea, and making it more acid. It had not been realised until recently, but this is part of why a lot of reefs are suffering, it is just another stressor on them.

The scientist they interviewed said the outlook was bleak, the problem is likely to get a lot worse and may result in mass extinctions of vulnerable species.

The adaptation arguement was put forward, however the scientific opinion was that the forecast changes will be too fast to give many species the chance to adapt, hence the likelihood of extinctions.

All due to human activity too.

Don't under estimate the medias need to sensationalise the 'news' to put you into a panic, they always have 'experts' on telling us worse case sceneiros for everything, personaly the chances of much television journalism being corrent or even close are slim. The media has an agenda.

I am sure everything will be fine, sure a few species will be made extinct by out use of technology, but with technology comes progress and that brings new tools for us to identify more new species, this returning the ballance. 1 goes away, 1 more gets found. Even.

It is typical of humans to destroy everything. give it few years and there wont be much left.

Progress these days means destruction for animals.

Maybe we should ban the imports of coral and fish as most of it dies in tanks anyway.

Sensationalised ??
