clarkeymaster
I have two goldfish in my garage in a tank of course, i's wandering what would a normal fantail wants as its optimum temperature and what would be to cold for them. They dont seem very energetic and hang round the bottom of the tank resting against the gravel!
Faran
For a regular fantail goldfish you want a water temp from 10 degrees and higher. If it's getting below that the fish can survive but don't expect them to be social. Remember that in many places goldfish are kept outside throughout winter without problems, but that's generally in a pond which generally keeps water warmer than a glass tank with freezing air all around. As long as the water doesn't freeze over, you should be fine.
mustcooktea
How big is the tank, clarkeymaster? A smaller tank is likely to drop to a lower temp during the night especially but in Auckland I wouldn't have thought that temperature would be too much of an issue. My daugher's goldfish (in her bedroom) had their temperature drop to 10 degrees the other day (now back up to 12 or 13) and they were still active. I have heard that below 10 degrees you shouldn't feed them and I have reduced feeding our goldfish for the winter. BTW what is their current temperature? Wok
I wouldn't worry too much about it. my goldfish are a bit sluggish at the moment too with the cooler weather. Just don't feed them too much as they are not doing a heck of a lot of swimming and socialising when it is cold.
clarkeymaster
The tank the goldfish are in is 20l and the current temp as at 7.00pm tonight was just 11 degrees. Thanks for the feedback
Caryl
I hope they are small goldfish as 20L is too small for goldfish. If you are concerned, pack polystyrene around the tank or cover it at night with a quilt or similar. At below 10C they go into semi hibernation and certainly slow down in cooler temps. Don't we all? clarkeymaster
Iv got about 20 goldfish fry, some might be calico fantails, some might be orandas but how much would be able to get them for if they are around 2cm long.
Wok
for the orandas, if you wait till the wen (growth on the head) forms then you could get quite a bit for them. As for the calico fans then I would only imagine a couple bucks for them
