muerk
Hi there, I've just got my first ever tank of fish, although my husband has had tropicals from before I married him. Hmmm, about eight or ten years maybe. I've never been overly keen on a tropical tank, but I do like single fin coldwater fish, so I've got 2 comets, a big mystery snail and a ramshorn snail. Also the oxy weed brought with it a baby snail who keeps going MIA in the tank. So yeah, HI!
Caryl
Hi and welcome muerk. Quite a few others have goldfish as well. I like the comets but do not like the fancy goldfish so much.

Pegasus
Hi muerk, Great to have you join us. Many started off with a couple of Goldies... now look at them complete Fishaholics The "weed" you have is possibly a plant called Elodia Densa.. or commonly known as "Oxygen Weed".. but if you can describe it, or post a pic, we will soon let you know what it is. Lots to see and do here... might catch you in the chat some night. Bill.
muerk
Caper: Yes I saw your goldfish-tropical thread. Who knew grit under a tank could be so serious! (She hopes that she is remembering the right thread here). Pegasus: Yes, it is "oxygen weed", unsure about botanical name though. Long thin stems with small leaves radiating outwards, no apparent root system (but I got my from Animates, so maybe there are roots on a wild plant). I'm getting small new shoots off my plant too, but it makes so many dead leaves, I'm worried about overloading my new tank with waste stuff. Pegasus
Hi again Muerk, Sounds like it is the Elodia type plant. If you click on the FNZAS logo at the top left of thiis page, you will be led to another part of the site where you will find heaps of stuff... plus a plant data base where you can ID the plant. You said: I'm getting small new shoots off my plant too, but it makes so many dead leaves, I'm worried about overloading my new tank with waste stuff. Quite right... it does tend to go a bit mushy (especially in a warm tank).. but another reason is that the Goldies tend to love to munch on it, and after a few chews you get dying leaves and quite a bit of mess. Goldies "are" pretty messy in their habits, waste production, and eating.. so you just have to keep up with the regular clean-ups after them. You can nip the stalks off about midway and transplant them, and under the right conditions they should grow.. but if the growth will keep up to the hungry Goldies is another matter Try them with a bit of lettuce leaf... this might help give the plants a rest. If your fish tend to uproot the plants, then anchor them down with a small pebble and a rubber band. All the best.. Bill.

muerk
Yup, it's Elodea canadensis alright. Oh well that's good, I can just keep tidying up after my fishies and the plant will just keep on growing. Although I did realise that I've just biffed most of my new growth away by mistake after reading how Elodea is propagated - opps. Oh well, the remaining plant still looks ok, and I can always go and get some more and take better care of it now that I'm aware how to. mustcooktea
Hi muerk and welcome to the site. I am another goldfish owner (well my 8 year old is). We have a black moor and a fantail and have only had them a couple of months. I am sticking with fake plants at the moment as the tank hasn't got any lighting and I know that goldfish are hard on plants. Good luck with your tank. PS What size is your tank? muerk
Hi there. It's a marina tank, only 10L, which means I'm a bit obsessed about ammonia. I'm wondering how big my comets will get. :-?
Shelley
I have never had any luck with okygen weed (on the few occasions when the kids had goldfish years ago) now i realise they must have eaten the damned thing lol. I was always surprised the plant was sold without any roots and figured the reason was so it wouldnt grow and i would have to go back and get more. (cynical me!) welcome and enjoy the site.....so much to learn, so many friendly people to do the teaching...it is great
