Fruju
Can find them in estuaries. I have spotted them in Whangateau harbour.
sammy225
Hi Fruju, thanks for the help, tried low tidal rock pools, no luck yet, but the little buggers must be in there somewhere:)
Fruju
Won't find them in rockpools.
Shilo
Forget the rock pools. Try sandy / muddy bottoms of harbour channels where they can dig burrows. There are 2 sorts in NZ now, the native and a recent immigrant from Japan. The Japanese one is found in the Hokianga, Kaipara and Manakau harbours. Most of the 2 types are seen when caught in flounder nets.
sammy225
Thanks for the input guy's, didn't think there would be enough water cover in tidal estuaries. I doubt there would be any in hawke's Bay waters then. Due to our murky water's, it's probably best to find a fisherman in those area's, I guess would be the only way. The Japanese variety would be an interesting set up. Thanks for this guy's:)
sammy225
I guess they would need water cover continuously, unlike crabs

sammy225
Fantastic, how did you manage to get the larvae. If you know anyone who can get em, let me know will buy a couple or few
livingart
LOL you can't sell the native ones without a permit. They start appearing at the water surface in the plankton layer around November, can catch them with a fine net. The Mantis larvae are a light green colour.
