ormali
I am in Wellington - Newlands in fact, and have just upgraded my widdle itty bitty 40l tank for a 4 foot 260 litre one. My fish thought they had died and ended up in the ocean! I am fairly new at this stuff and am having some probs with my gouramis - any help with my post on the diseases board would be much appreciated! I have 2 gouramis, 2 angels, a few neons, a male and female fighter (40l tank will become nursery tank soon I hope!), some golden barbs, some swordtails, two plecos, a bromze corey cat, a molly and a platy, red tailed black shark (Queen of the tank) and a couple of danios - phew, what a hoard! They all get on really well and are loving their new home. We have only been in the North Island a month so we are still learning our way around, so if anyone knows anyone who breeds and sells fish, I would love to hear. Cheers everyone

Pegasus
Welcome to the NZ Fishroom Ormali. I've been at this hobby more years than I care to remember, but I can safely say that 85% of all white spot cases within a few days of buying fish, are caused by the owner... not by the store. You say: and have just upgraded my widdle itty bitty 40l tank for a 4 foot 260 litre one. I am fairly new at this stuff and am having some probs It seems your larger tank has not been set up long, and possibly the stress of transferring the fish may have caused the outbreak of WS... or the (seemingly) rapid growth in your fish stocks. If the Betta has only just been bought and then contracted it, then chances are the change of environment has brought it on. Hope we can guide you through your probs, Regards, Bill. Caryl
Hi and welcome ormali. Did you have all those fish in the little tank or did you go out and buy them all at once once the big tank was set up? I think this might be your problem. Have you tested the water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
jude
Hi and welcome Another Wellingtonian for the group ........... I've never had a problem with any fish bought locally so perhaps it is stress or something in your case. Cheers Jude
ormali
Sorry folks, I didnt really mean it as derogatory but I can see it came out that way  There's one for rereading your posts before you post them. Just frustration getting the better of me. I hadnt realised that WhiteSpot was a reaction to stress - thought it was a fungi? Does stress just make them more vulnerable to it? Thanks for the advice - yes the water was good to go before the fishes went in and no, we didnt have all of them in the little tank. Cheers

Shelley
Hi Ormali...havent read your other posts yet but will go looking for them soon. Sounds like a lovely set up you have. I am interested to hear you say they all get on so well as I was warned off putting angels with gouramis or bettas (as the angels can be quite stroppy)....then again...since I have been reading from this site people have said it depends greatly on the personality of the individual fish. I was also put off adding golden barbs for the same reason. I had been tempted to get some simply for the contrast of colour but decided against it after i heard they can be a bit stroppy. I've been having a few problems myself lately with my main tank....and am due to cart a couple of tanks in to the glass man for some minor repairs shortly.....once i have my lighting sorted....it will be all systems go (and a couple of long cycling processes for 2 of the larger tanks....) although i have learned a lot there is still heaps more to learn and here is an ideal place to do it. Anyway...cheers and welcome.
