Ira
My daughter has lost interest in her goldfish tank and i want to change it to a cichlid grow out can i just add a heater to the tankYes. will the bacteria in the current filter adjust to a heated tank? Yes. Just get some tropicals in the tank in the next few days or they'll starve to death anyway. And keep an eye on the ammonia the first few weeks., Edited January 16, 2016 by Ira
alanmin4304
Be aware that goldfish generally carry a lot of parasites but are usually ok with them if they are healthy to start with. These parasites would be transferred to your tropical and they will not handle them as well.

Adrienne
Run it in a sink or bucket with household bleach then rinse it thoroughly until you can't smell the bleach any more. You cando the same wth any filter sponges and also your tank and nets etc
alanmin4304
Once you have rinsed it all a bit you could add a little of one of the products available to neutralize chlorine in water.
