Devrens
Went for a quick look down by the water at the reserve that runs along Kevin Hart Drive today. Saw what looked like a big black goldfish, but I'm sure you folks will have a better idea. Thought I would share! Can anyone identify these marginal plants?http://imgur.com/a/Ohgvn
calculator
Not sure about the plants, but there are definitely some wild goldfish around in the waterways out east.

Adrienne
I'm not familiar with the area as that was all farmland when we lived out that way but there are certainly goldfish in a lot of public ponds and waterways and also pest catfish. What does the wetlands link into or is it self contained? For the plants take a look at our database on this same website http://aquariumworld.nz/databases/1-plants/. There is also a pest fish database where you can get a good look at the main pest catfish here. Next time I am out that way I must go have a look for myself
Devrens
I'm not familiar with the area as that was all farmland when we lived out that way but there are certainly goldfish in a lot of public ponds and waterways and also pest catfish. What does the wetlands link into or is it self contained?I'm not entirely sure! It flows like a creek and has an artificial waterfall on one end next to the soccer field. The water flows in from underground through some culverts that run under the road and under the subdivisions across Smales Road. So no idea!Edit: I'm about to go pick up my boy from tutoring, I'll snap some pictures quickly on my way. kiwiraka
The plant could be willow weed http://www.dowagro.com/nz/resource/willowweed.htm. The fish is definitely a carp, most likely a goldfish. How big was it?
Devrens
So it has multiple culverts feeding into it like this. Then just before running under Guys Road it goes down this concrete waterfall.Heaps of goldfish. Some of them around a foot or more in length.Other side of Guys Rd.I think it needs a shorter light cycle.

Probably a good idea to contact DOC
Adrienne
This is an article about grass carphttp://www.aquaticweedmanagement.nz/species/grass-carp/There are certainly fish which match your description swimming in the creeks around Western Springs and some very large orange goldfish swimming in the dog pond area of Waiatarua Reserve in Remuera. My dog finds them quite fascinating.
kiwiraka
Grass carp wouldn't bother tadpoles. And also have not been selectively bred for colour variation and are usually a green-brown colour.Did you get close enough to see if they had barbels? kiwiraka
So how hard would it be to catch these big orange goldfish??Depends how big your net is If you go there regularly you could train them to come for food and try and scoop one out, but why do you want to catch one...? Adrienne
So how hard would it be to catch these big orange goldfish??Depends how deep you want to wade I guess and how you feel about being in water that potentially carries a risk of disease. Big goldfish and aquaponics go together well in NZ..If my big bronze goldfish was a snapper it would almost be a keeper.. and I've seen bigger as well.
