Recommended Posts

Well it does'nt rain it poors. My sjd's are spawning like mad , last night i noticed my baby cockatoo apisto's had babys them selves and today the bristle nose imported as Ancistrus hoplogenys have spawn. :o

Rob has any one breed these before ? :D

the male's nest is a hole in a medium piece of drift wood .

I feed them tetramin flake ( the rich mix) frozen blood worms and frozen zucchine.

ther's about 20 to 30 brite orange eggs all the way down the bottem of the hole . :o

as there is 5 of this type of b/n in the tank i don't know which female bred .

sorry I don't have a camera to take a pic of the b/n's, but this is the same type of bristle nose that modren angel had a post on in the catfish forum.

Well done caserole :D, thats great news!!!!!

How large are the one's that you have?? I haven't heard of anyone spawning these guys, but that doesn't mean too much, lol.

If you manage to raise some I would love to get some off you.

Cheers, CatBrat.

Thanks Matt,

but no I'm not selling any cockatoo's just yet . I have the orange flash type and need to get my hands on the triple reds and normal forms , so i can breed back with the differant forms to keep the genes strong . If this lastest spawn ( 50 fry ) is succesful I prob will sell some.

Hi Stu,

I don't recall anyone having bred these before (haven't got the database in front of me at the moment). Also we'd have to decide whether the hoplogenys is accurate or if there is another species that is a better match for the fish.

thanks Mystic , we'll see what happens dad is still siting on the nest , which I gess is a good thing.

Rob , you noticed I wrote imported as I don't think they are hop's as I have a female that is ( any body got a male? )!, But there not the commen B/N either . Dereck H had a look at them and agreed .there body pattern is differant and there much flater.Definately something new.

how / what would I register them as then ?

As Alan says you could register them as Ancistrus spp or if there is a species that you've come across that is close but not exactly then we could register them as Ancistrus cf species. The 'cf' implying that it's very similar to the species named but not exactly the same.

Thanks Alan , Rob . :D

The eggs had hatched when I got home from work today.

There are only 5 fish in the tank ( 100lt ) around 7.5" to 8.5" long, all this spe. of b/n so all should be ok .

However my new Iwaki pump has just cleared cust. which will improve water clarity and enable me to freed larger amounts of food.

Just have to be carefull to begin with-changing water conditions.

I CatBrat,

yeah there going great .

free swimming for 5 days now. :D

Luckly the breeding tank was part of my 1000lt system so I can move the fry with no problem at all (it's all the same water) , you know in case the other B/N want MEAT in there diet .

Havent counted them yet may have some were around 20 - 40 , mum and dad are still young them selves so maybe i'll get more next time.

MA I have 3 males and 2 females so i'm fine thanks .

If these little ones grow I should be able to send some you way too.

When I saw your one in the LFS I thought it was a female , these b/n seem to develop there bristles a little later .

Hay CatBrat your really keen .

there doing just fine lost the odd 1 or 2 but the rest are growing ( counted 30 ), not very fast thou.

I 'm feeding them tetramin flake "the rich mix", frozen bloodworms every day and zucchine or cucumber which ever I have on the day.

have moved 8 into 2 other tanks with some killiefish fry just to keep bottem of the tank clean.

3 weeks ago I moved 1 female into another tank that had a lot of brown algee, when it cleaned that tank I moved it to another. 2 or 3 day ago I placed it back with the others very fat belly and all . the tanks it had been in were all part of the same system as is the breeding tank.

just got home from work, feed all my fish and noticed the largest male in the spawning hole they use last time . checked for eggs and sure enough they'd spawned again .

I'm really pleased . as you may have realised ( from my other posts ) last time they breed I had just installed a new pump which improved the water quailty dramaticly, this may have induced the previse spawn. not this time, just normal 5% dayly water change verity of food and plenty of it.

not sure how many eggs there are as it's hard to get a good look at them, the hole is deep in a piece of wood.
