Is there a Southern Club?

The most southern club, and nearest to you, is the Dunedin Aquarium and Pond Society. They meet at the Pet Warehouse every 2nd Tuesday of the month 7pm.

Have you thought of starting up a local club? I am happy to help you with doing this, having helped some others already.

How would we go about it Caryl? Have no idea where to begin or whats involved. Any info would be great as a starting point, then maybe we could gauge interest to see if it would be feasible?

Our club began when an advert appeared in the local paper asking people interested in forming a fish club to ring the phone number given, so we did. They then arranged for all to meet one Sunday afternoon at their house and it went from there.

These days you can also put posters up in vets, libraries, any community notice boards you have, malls, supermarkets, schools etc.

Another thing, if you have a free community paper, ask them to do an article about you wanting to see if there was enough interest in forming a club. Alternatively, just do the poster thing (and the advert in the paper if you can afford it), wait until you have enough interested to form a club then go to the paper and ask them to do an article on your newly formed club.

I am happy to supply posters for you if you tell me the details you want on them. I can do them in colour for you too so they will stand out.

If there is enough interest and the club gets off the ground you may then consider whether you want to join the FNZAS. This gives your members access to the free Aquarium World magazine and a Year Book listing, among other things, all the other affiliated clubs in the country and their members' details. It also lists all retailers offering discount to FNZAS members.

Thanks Caryl for the info. I'll ask at the main lfs in invers next time I'm there as I think that would the best place to start gauging interest as we only have really have two lfs in the district. East Road Pets is our best bet as they specialise in tropical, marine and pond fish (as well as other pet stuff) and I know that the family that runs the business all keep tropicals etc. They may already have a club of some sort that may not be affiliated? The other lfs is horrid. The tanks are always green and gungy and usually have at least one dead fish per tank. Its gross. Would be really good to have some sort of get together to exchange info etc and travelling wouldnt be a big deal, whereas the Dunedin club is just too far away to travel to at nights for meetings. Thanks!

AFAIK not for a lot of years since the last one wound up.

I could spread some posters around town, don't have alot of spare time to organise much though.

I have read your postings here and have some ways to help you guys. I took your ideas of starting a local club to my employer ( liz, at East Road Pets ) and she is more then keen to help you get started. If a couple of you could get organized and arrange a time to speak with her who knows what might happen. She is happy to provide a venue to hold club meetings etc. There used to be a club ages ago, and there isnt any reason there couldent be another one now.

If I can help in any way please let me know.
