Caryl
I seem to remember people saying it is not a good idea and am trying to remember why not. :dunno: We made our own under tank heat pad that fitted the whole footprint of the tank. alanmin4304
I did it to heat a tank divided into 6 compartments to start with, but also used one on a tank for converting emersed plants to submersed, and they worked well till the quakes flooded the thermostats. David R
why would you bother? Big heaters are ugly unless you have a sump to hide them in...
spoon
You would need to run it on a temperature controller or suitable submersible thermostat both of with would cost more than a good quality aquarium heater , not worth it IME. The supplied thermostat isn't designed to work through glass and is probably not accurate enough either . You run the risk of cooking your tank not to mention using more power
Caryl
We made our own as I wanted as little equipment in the tank as possible (and didn't have a sump in which to hide stuff). In those days heaters were also a lot more expensive. An under tank heater gives even heat across the whole base.
