Drifty
I am having 2 overflows for my new tank, I have ordered 2 32mm tank fittings for this, will this be enough?? or should I go with 2 40mm fittings instead. The return pump at this stage will be 4200l per hour
chimera
2 x 32mm = AMPLE!!! That is effectively about 14,500 litres per hour - at a maximum flow rate of 2 metres per second (which is the maximum flow rate recommended before you start to get 'water hammer' which can damage the pipes)
cracker
Man... I have just got online after unblocking my overflow! Some small rocks and a Glass shrimp had got caught in an elbow and was back filling the tank. Lucky I was looking and noticed an extra amount of bubbles coming from the main return. The sump had backfilled over the top of the overflow chamber. :-? Its not ample when there blocked!
jetskisteve
Those Aquaclear powerhead filters that fit on the end make good insurance, keeps snails out too
Pies
My tank is 1,450 litres, its powered by an IWAKI 100, it has 1x 40mm outlet in the overflow. I am confident I could increase the pump size by 50% and it would still easily cope. More than enough. Pie
Ira
My tank has a 25..No, just measured it, looks like 32mm overflow and my pump should be doing somewhere around 4000 liters per hour. It's pretty close to the limit for the overflow.
Pies
IRA, your tank has a 20mm outlet overflow hole, with a 25mm standpipe. I know, I built it Pies
Ira
There you go. Hard to get a tape measure in to measure it.
Pies
Yeah I can imagine! Also if its not quite doing enough, the HANSEN fittings seem to be quite restrictive, as do the 'grey' union taps we are using. I would reccomend getting the Dremal to work and 'honing it out'. A few mm would make a huge difference. pie

Warren
I'm using 2 x 32 on 6000L/hour. Looks like it has spare capacity but how much, - who knows. The two 32mm pipes feed into a 50mm return. My sump is above the tank with the overflow in the sump... Using a Grundfos FP4 100W, no longer available. Now licensed to Oase as the Oase Nautilus 1600 (1600GPH). Since this pump only has a 400mm head it pumps just over 6000L/hour according to the pump curve. I've never actually measured it so it could be a bit less.
