Godly3vil
I recently purchased 12 blue rams from a member on here and was really surprised last night when I sat down to watch them that the 2 largest have decided to pair up and spawn already, I think they are only about 4 months old and are still quite small (1.5cm max) They still haven't developed all of their nice colours yet and are all together in a 70ltr tank that I set up for my Apsitogramma Trifasciata which are spawning aswell, I am hoping that they will be fine in there at the moment as I don't really have enough tank space in my other tanks yet to separate them as getting rid of swordtails seems to be quite hard down here. What I am wondering is is it usual for them to spawn when they are this young/small and if they do raise some fry will it be ok to raise them with the trifasciata fry in the same tank feeding them the same food? I will of course remove both pairs of cichlids at the same time so that one of the pair doesn't eat the others young. I will try to get some decent photos later when I feed them. F15hguy
congrats, it does seem a bit young, but if they go then good on them I would expect it to be an unsuccessful spawn though as most rams first spawns are either infertile or get eaten
Godly3vil
Yeah, I am not really expecting any to hatch and if they do I don't think they will get past the free swimming stage. I am just wondering for future spawns if they are successful.
danval
Good work mate! Mine were successful on their second spawn. They should be hardier than their parents which subsequently died. Good luck
Godly3vil
Cheers Dan! Yeah I am hoping so as most of the ones that people have die on them are imported stock and as these are bred by you locally they should hopefully be fine! Godly3vil
What colour are fertilized eggs supposed to be? Their is around 100ish nice and white eggs that the male is guarding.
F15hguy
should be nice golden colour and translucent, white is normally infertile or fungussed.

Godly3vil
Cheers Luke, they ate them within 24 hours anyway lol. I'm just happy that I have at least 1 female out of the group of 12 that I bought.
F15hguy
first time is normally a bust anyways..... start feeding them up and im sure you'll be successful with them soon.... remember the key to rams is immaculate water quality
Luke*
you can also try a little methylene blue to stop fungus spreading good season for mosquito larvae... sorry neighbours....!

Likoma
Good work mate. My little pair bred a few days ago and I was able to snap some photos. The boy ate up all the eggs but in all honesty he needed fattening up. You can see the translucent eggs just to the left of her. Her Good luck with yours
Godly3vil
I have a pair separated in a tank by themselves, just conditioning them up now with some live food. They all lay quite frequently but always eat the eggs, only once has a batch made it to freeswimming but got eaten within a day of being so.
