Godly3vil
Has anyone had any experience with sexing these awesome dwarf cichlids, I have read lots online and still can't 100% sex one of mine as there is a load of conflicting information. Definite male; Not so definite female; From what I have read, unlike most other apistos the female does not always look a lot different than the male as this particular species of apisto have been so over bred in captivity that some females have started to take on male characteristics. I would like to be 100% sure that it is a female though if possible as I would like to breed them myself, it shows a lot of signs of being a female, kind of displays like a female krib does when they are in breeding mood and it is definitely the less dominant of the two. Caldwell
I would suggest a non-dominate male if they are in the same tank.
disgustipated
could be a sneaker male in which case he'd be showing female characteristics..
disgustipated
a good way to spot females is the black on the fronts of the ventral fins. males do not have black on theirs.

I'd say your fish is a male though, from the looks of it. I could be wrong though.
Godly3vil
Yeah, that's what I am thinking as well. Bugger. Kind of weird it doesn't have any black markings on its fins though.

Joe
Yes I know that is what you said. Look at the photo of that female that I posted. It does not have any black on the ventral fins. While that is a common characterestic and is always present on wild fish, like Godly3vil said these fish have been so over-bred that sometimes some of them display male characterestics or are missing certain traits that usually females should have. disgustipated
lol my apologies man i misread you. if you're at a shop and trying to pick a female, seeing black on the front edge of the ventral is a good way to be sure you have a lady. i guess there are always exceptions to the rule.
