camtang
I am looking at buying a cannister filter to run my grow out tank approx 600 litre. found this on TM http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 092474.htm does anyone use these or have opinions on these filters? or know any other canister that is good bang for your buckfor a tank that size with small fish? SamH
Why would you pay $279 for that when Sun Sun HW-302 filters go for $88 + shipping? :-? I don't think 1250l/h is enough for a 600L tank.
camtang
hence my other question of any others that are good bag for you buck
camtang
and they are not suitable for the size tank I am running
SamH
http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 175105.htm Far more flow, similar price, still not suitable for your sized tank. Looked at Pond Filters such as this http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/f ... 956409.htm ?
camtang
not yet, but still looking. But the original one is only $40 more then that one and will have ample filtration, according to description of course
SamH
not yet, but still looking. But the original one is only $40 more then that one and will have ample filtration, according to description of course You're going to buy a product based on what the seller tells you? The one I linked is $29 cheaper and has a higher flow, it will physically filter more water per hour, it's that simple. I'd definitely get a pond filter if I were you, look at the turnover per dollar, $0.025 for the pond filter vs $0.2 for the original (rough math of course). camtang
You're going to buy a product based on what the seller tells you Nope hence why I have just asked on this forum. I dont know anyone who has used a boyu or heard any first hand info on them And as for the pond filter, I havnt dont ANY research on them before, and wouldnt know where to start on them
F15hguy
32W is a rather high amount of power for only 1250LPH, i wonder if there is a typo here
camtang
what would it normaly/should be?
SamH
Some pond filters come without pumps so be aware that you might need an external pump to drive them, best to ask questions. I've found Sun Sun canisters to be reliable, never tried Boyu. There's no reason a sealed pond canister filter can't be used on a large aquarium. Li@m
I have and aqua one Cf series on my 2ft planted tank, they are good quality slightly more expensive that the sunsun ones. You would probably want 2 Aqua One CF1200 which cost about $130nzEach
F15hguy
the Aquis 1250 has 1400LPH and uses 28W Fluval 306 does 1150LPH 15W Eheim 2217 1000LPH 20W Eheim 2075 proffesional 1250LPH 16W
F15hguy
plus easy to get parts for aqua one filters
SamH
What sort of a turnover would he be looking at for a 600L tank? I would think at least 2500l/h if lightly stocked.
camtang
I would suspect somewhere about there, but as they are only young and will only be about 25 fish I think I could get away with much less, fish are only about 15 mm in size so still very young. this is just a short term fix until I get the sump set up and running for it. I have just noticed that the tank they are in is quickly getting to small. and getting a canister for this tank will be cheaper and quicker in the long term then getting a new tank set up and then doing this tank
F15hguy
I would try for a minimum of 1800LPH, but if you want decent stocking go for 3-5000LPH maybe more depending on fish types. remember that LPH isn't he be all and end all as you also want the water to have a reasonable contact time with the media, so 2 x lowerflow canisters will out preform a higher flow canister. btw if just for a grow out tank why not do a pile of sponge filters????, by far cheaper as a short term option

camtang
Or Hamburg Mattenfilters? I had considered that. but having the extra canni hanging round after its use seems like a good idea, even if its just for a back up
F15hguy
or damn I soooo am going to build one, now where did I leave that spare tank......
SamH
but having the extra canni hanging round after its use seems like a good idea, even if its just for a back up So get the cheap Sun Sun HW-302, they're decent mid sized filters. now where did I leave that spare tank...... And spare bathroom sink?
F15hguy
ooooh, in a big tank you could use a toilet!!!!! now your thinking.
camtang
I havnt heard anything bad about sunsun as of yet, so it maybe worth looking into getting possibly two
nudge
be aware that the lph they are quoting is for the canisters maximum output i.e, no media inside and not sitting below the tank, on most canisters you can nearly half that out put once you have the canister full of media and filter wool. The aqua one cf1200 is rated around 1200 lph max, but with media etc is rated at around 760lph. Aqua one and sun sun are great filters for the price and easy to get parts for the other one i would imagine would be a mission to find spare parts. For the price of the other i would def go the sunsun, you can never have to much filtration
