Lucid
I'm not sure what this fish is, is it like a guppy but lives in cold water? Also how easy are they to look after? (edit-moved to correct topic)
Caryl
Did it have a pic that didn't get moved with the question??

Rob
Original thread was titled "Leopard Danio" (in Livebearer forum). No, leopard danios aren't really like guppies. Guppies give birth to live young while danios are egglayers. Also they prefer different water conditions (guppies prefer alkaline water, danios prefer acidic) but they're reasonably adaptable. While some shops will sell them as 'coldwater' fish (please, let's not get into that issue here) they need to be in a heated tank (or at least an unheated tank in a heated room). Alan
Why not Rob?? Tell ya what, when they spawn, and it is protected, and the adults are then removed, you get what appears to be 100's of babies, very small too. Hope the fish you are looking at is NOT a gambusia. They are  in more ways than one. Alan
Caryl
I know the original thread said leopard danios but I wanted to check they weren't being confused with leopardfish re the cold water bit.
RoninBoxers
Might make more sense if it were about leopard fish. They look a lot more like guppies than danios do!! And they are livebearers...
Carl :)
Leopard fish was the name I was orignally told but i couldnt find anything on them so I assumed that leopard danios were the same thing, and that was their proper name. I got abit confuesd between the two when i was searching. If anyone has some links they would be greatly appreciated.
Rob
Things are now a little clearer. Leopard fish are livebearers, and can be kept in unheated conditions. Generally not demanding to keep but somepeople have experienced mass die-offs for no clear reason. Another common name for them is Caudo, scientific name is Phalloceros caudimaculatus. If you google the scientific name you should get some hits. They are definitely not the same as the mosquito fish that is a pest in NZ. RoninBoxers
Leopard fish are one of the 2 kinds of fish I have :-) They do tolerate cooler temperatures and you need to beware of cold snaps. The mass die-offs could possibly from them getting chilled, they don't do well under 18c. They also like warmer temps to breed.
Carl :)
I'll think about it for a bit. It was suggested to me to try them while I wait for the end of the year when i can get some newts. Unless there is any other breeders that have theirs breeding at the moment, but i'm pretty sure that they only breed after winter. I have a 450mm long x 250mm deep x 270mm high tank. Will this be sufficant for keeping 4 or so newts or afew leopard fish?
Alan
I have leopard fish outside at the moment They wintered outdoors too. Seem happy enough. Now they ARE what I'd call cold water fish. Alan
