henward
http://www.dunlopfoam.co.nz/Foam/Foam-Products/QuickDryFoam/ confused. i remember i bought these awhile ago, but i dont exactly remember if it was this. but para rubber only stocks these coarse foam.... they dont get any other type of foam. according to the guy, the factory told him not to use this form. I do not know why... but i want coarse foam for my fx5... any idea what foam or where i can get coarse foam? Think the type of foam around the fx5 on the outer rim of the baskets.... that type but i want sheets of it to cut in circles.... now im getting paranoid, why the guy advised me not to use this foam.... Cricketman
In-built antimicrobial protection prohibits the growth of mould and fungus inside outdoor cushions even when left outdoors for long periods That will be why...

Likoma
Hey Henward, You will be wanting to use an open cell structure foam that has not had any chemicals used on it. The density should be 10PPi for the first phase and then gradually denser all the way up to 30PPi as a polisher which has the added benefit of being an excellent host for the beneficial bacteria you want to encourage in your system. I use them in my breeding vats. Check out this website http://www.swisstropicals.com/Poret%20Filter%20Foam%20Pricelist.html I've ordered a large quantity of foam for my set up and might have a bit going spare which can be cut to size for you, a hole lot cheaper than the FX 5 ready made filter cartridges, and I might add in my opinion it will be better quality. I've been keeping fish for 15 years and have always made my own filters but recently I started looking into the sponge filter, what can I say but I am totally sold, and not looking back. They are easy, effective and and great bang for your buck! Look at this article http://casb.okstate.edu/casb/fishchum/index.php/scientists-featured-articles/79-freshwater-filtration-novel-insights-and-practical-considerations Cheers, Greg P.S. a go pro underwater camera mounted in your tank at feeding time would be killer! GrahamC
Nevertheless an up to date review of filter material .. though it omits mentioning Kaldnes K1 media.
David R
Porret foam would be the way to go if you don't mind shelling out for it, could use different grades to have it catching finer and finer particles as it goes thru the filter. I was going to try get the inlaws to bring some back from the states to save on the shipping but couldn't jack it up in time. Let me know if you're going to order some, dad is oing to the US for Oshkosh this yeah, might be able to get him to bring it back.
henward
where were you gonna buy it from? website?
David R
Yeah from their website. Not sure what shipping would cost, its light but the volumetric weight would be quite high.
GrahamC
Can't they squeeze it smaller to reduce the volume?
GrahamC
Maybe it's cheaper to buy from manufacturer but I doubt they'll take small orders http://www.emw.de/en/aquaristikfilter1.html
blueether
I see they do a fluidized-bed product, an alternative to K1? http://www.emw.de/en/poretaquas.html
GrahamC
interesting ... large slabs of Poret media in the tank being fluidized. Perhaps it's cheaper than K1. But it doesn't look as though the water is being forced thru the media so I wonder how much less effective it is used in this way.
