I had christmas at Castle Point then went to Auckland, and out to Leigh and Murawai Beach, then down to Tauranga/ Te Puke and over to Hamilton. Over this time I took more than 1 thousand photos so the ones below are a small percentage of them. Castlepoint Early morining sun, christmas day This was found at Matacona beach near castle point. For scale look at the hand, not the body. Any ideas on what it is? (the paua shell in hand was not related) Auckland Zoo Galapagous Tortoise These were taken at Auckland Zoo's new NZ section (very impressed with it) A Rough Gecko Weka Kea flying Tiritiri Matangi Island Takahe Saddleback North Island Robin Reptile park A little gecko Murawai Beach My sister found this skink on the beach, anyone know what species it is? Cricketman Posted January 3, 2012 Report Share Posted January 3, 2012 probably a giant "shield shell" (Scutus antipodes) - most photos on the net show it with its "shield" exposed, which is not always the case, they normally have a thin "skin" over it. Again, that one is the biggest that I have ever seen! Most people mistake them for a Paua without their shell. Though could be a type of sea- hare, too.
