smidey
I am about to fill my water tanks up from town supply, 40,000L worth. How long do you think it will take before i don't have to use de-chlorinator when doing water changes?
kiwiplymouth
Have you got a large air pump or small compressor that would allow you to aerate the 40,000L ? It would definitely speed up the dissipation process
blueether
that would depend on the % of the water change, and the % of chlorine to start with. I think most town supply is allowed to be as high as 4 or 5 ppm but it is often 1/4 of that ie around 1ppm at the tap. most bacterium don't like levels of around about 0.2-0.4 ppm (mg/L) So a 25% water change at 1ppm free chlorine could start to kill bacteria, once the chlorine starts to react with the organic compounds in the fishtank, including bacteria, the available chlorine will fall fast. Sorry but I cant comment on the dispersal rate, but would be faster in an open vessel, and with agitation/aeration. Edit: Random webpage to back up some of the above http://www.lenntech.com/processes/disinfection/chemical/disinfectants-chlorine.htm
smidey
ok thanks. dispersion may not be the right word either but hey, you get what i mean. I was smart enough to do water changes on my tanks before the water started going in so I am good for a week or so. I haven't done any water changes for two weeks so i may just leave it for two weeks and use some water conditioner then.
jim r
I read somewhere that chlorine dissipates in 10 to 15 minutes.
