Caryl
I believe you can buy pre-made ones for standard sizes. If you use a fine, stiff, mesh the water will flow between the two so need for extra heater or filter.
Sophia
depends on how permanent you want it to be and what/who you are trying to seperate. I put 2 small fish in a divided tank and they swam straight through the gaps in the side  , but a bigger fish wouldn't be an issue. I have pieces of perspex that are held in place with suction cups from HFF - about $8 for a pair.
mickey_1975
Hi, I use an undergravel filter as a devider for a few of my tanks. I got second hand ones but hollywood sell them cheap. They are great as you only need one heater and one filter as the water circulates very well through them. http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/air-belle-undergravel-filter-lge/m/927/

burrowssj
heres how I made mine, pics pretty much say it all. Don't know where you live but go into your local shower manufacturing shop e.g bathroom direct and ask if they would spare you a couple bits of off cut plastic sheet. Its food grade plastic and doesn't harm the fish. The netting I got from a plant shop also chemical free and doesn't harm the fish. I was selling these for 15$ at one point, but I no longer work at bathroom direct so can't really make them now-although I have a few bits of plastic here if you are in chch-I dont have a pic of it completely finished haha just needed to trim the edges and they looks alot nicer. although if you wana do it real cheap an easy just cut one peice of plastic an staple netting over it alot easier an cheaper because you don't need to buy 15$ a tube silicone to do it
