critter_crazy
Like tanks, if you have live plants you'll probably get them whether you want them or not
aquariumbeginner32
Like tanks, if you have live plants you'll probably get them whether you want them or not  Really?! I have live plants in my tank. Only had it for about 5 weeks though. I'm really excited about my pond. I worked out it shouldn't cost much more than what it's cost me so far for my tank and everything else I've bought to go with it inc the fish. Hopefully this weekend I'll be .... :digH: not that I have to dig anything. :happy2: So fingers crossed it doesn't rain on Saturday at least. It can rain all it wants on Sunday because it will help fill up the pond LOL

aquariumbeginner32
I will. I've already got it all planned out LOL I want a white bottom so it's easy to see the fish, as opposed to black or blue. So I was going to go with silica sand. Of course it will be lined with pond liner. Then I was going to get some glass pebbles. WDYT? I know the silica sand will not stay white but I think it will still look ok. I'm going to have some water lillies and hopefully some kind of water feature and a bridge... or I will use a good strong plank of wood for the bridge that can be removed (so just there to use if you want to walk across it). I had a look on Trade Me for bridges but they are $290.. .don't think hubby will agree to get one lol As for the fantail goldfish. I am in love  with the blue/silver ones. But I will probably get 1 or 2 orange ones too I don't want to overstock but the pond is going to be over 330L so I think 3-4 will be fine. :happy2:
critter_crazy
I love the blue ones too!! So tempted to set up a coldwater tank of my own! Careful with the fantail goldfish though, they are much more sensitive than commets etc, but as long as you keep up good water quality they'll be fine  I tried silica sand a couple of months ago ang got rid of it within a couple of weeks. It went all brown and clumped together like it was caramelised  If you want light substrate maybe try a white or light grey gravel? This would look amazing http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/glacier-4-6mm-25kg-sack/m/1123/ :happy1:
aquariumbeginner32
Yeah I had a look at the HFF stock. I found this website yesterday.... http://www.stoneworld.co.nz/wawcs0112244/Designstone-Pebble.html I just love their moondance and snowstone pebbles as well as the colored glass ones.
aquariumbeginner32
Hmmm somewhere on the net I read that Fantail goldfish are hardy good beginner goldfish. :-?
critter_crazy
Maybe someone with more experience keeping them can give you some more info, but from what I've learnt during my animal science cert at uni they can be more sensitive to poor water quality, fluctuating temps etc. Particularly in ponds :dunno:
aquariumbeginner32
Hmmm maybe I should stick to a different type of goldfish. :dunno:
the-obstacle
good old comets will do really well in a pond. That said my friend has fancy tail goldfish in a pond he inherited when he bought the house and he doesn't run a filter on his pond and they still breed happily. Can't be too hard
