4 foot sword tank log

Well I'm finally down to just one tank (I don't count the breeding and fry rearing tanks :P)

Tank Dimensions: 1200x450x450

Lighting: T5HO 39W x 4. I currently only have 2 tubes in there, one is 16000k and the other is a marine blue actinic.

Substrate: Its just daltons propagating mix #2 I think.

Filtration: A sunsun 1000 l/ph canister and cf-700 canister. I will be adding a 3 foot sump in the near future too.

Other: I have pressurised Co2 which I am not using at the moment.

Plants:

So far I have, Echinodorus amazonicus, argentiniensis, horizontalis, ozelot (red), osiris, tenellus. There is also Abulia, dwarf sag, cabomba, rotala rotundafolia and a few others that will come out as I get more sword plants.

I am still looking for Echinodorus martii, horemani, parviflorus, leopard. And am toying with the idea of adding stargrass too.

Fish:

Currently 7 x discus, 3 x female tripple red cockatoo, bolivian ram pair, 1 x royal whiptail, 17 x cardinal tetra (discus eating them), 7 sterbai corydora and one common BN.

I would like to add 60 x cardinal tetra, swap a female cockatoo for a male, 2 x female agassizi and 1 x male. 15 - 20 x sterbai corydora, a male royal whiptail, some marble hatchetfish, no BN and maybe a fancy plec. Although I am already pushing my stocking limits.

Goal:

A beautiful heavily planted tank consisting only of sword plants.

A detailed article to come in A.W. Magazine if I finish on time.

First a couple of pictures and a video and then some questions.

With T8 15w tubes x 2

With the T5

I can spend hours watching this tank, almost as captivating at a reef.

Now, I will be buying some new t5 tubes early next week, What would be my best options? All one type of tube or a combination? I love the colour the actinic tube bring out in the fish, especially the cardinal tetra.

I was considering rescaping it, adding some JBL Aqua basis underneath and some different gravel, opinions on this would be good too. I still think I would be better off with a slightly larger tank, at least a bit more height for the discus. But with my back I can barely maintain this one.

Anyway, opinions and constructive criticism welcomed.

Yeah its a breeding cone. There are potentially 3 pairs in there, they fight over the filter inlets and heaters so this adds another place to spawn if they want to. I won't be raising any young, well not for a long time at least.

Big thanks to the-obstacle! :hail: !

This morning 2 female agassizi and one male cacatuoides male arrived. The male is already getting a tonne of attention from my 3 cacatuoides females so fingers crossed. I still need to get a male agassizi I heard there are some nice ones at HFF so I might have to look into that further this afternoon.

I got the sump a few days ago, another big thanks this time to bigbosspants! :hail: !

And many more thanks to alanmin for advice on the sword plants, kiwiplymouth for the horizontalis and tennelus, heir for the osiris, livingart for tonnes of advice, k1w1y2k for the discus and everybody else involved including wonderworld aquatics in rotorua for the great prices on cardinal tetra and sterbai corydora. I hope I haven't missed anyone, my apologies if I have.

It sure does suck, water everywhere. Thanks again to Livingart! Brought me a spare tank down strait away all fish transferred and alive. Yeah I think I will go 1500x450x650 or similar. Perhaps the same (1200x450) length and width but definitely want to go higher for the discus.

If there is anyone in my area with decent enough lighting and room would they mind sword sitting for me? The emergency tank I have left bare bottom due to running water on the floor, extra time cleaning and transferring gravel was not possible. I have a lot of sword plants that I would be gutted if I lost so if anyone can look after then for me I will make it worth their while.

The bright side is, I will get a brand new tank made and plumbed how I want it on a nice new stand.

What a day!

Haha I would love 1000 cardinals, that would be impressive.

I think I will get that tank if it has a stand, Just got quoted $670 for all the glass to make one the size I want. That's with a 10% discount :(

The other option is repairing the current tank, it was $184.30 for a sheet of standard 10mm glass cut to 1200x450, I could get optiwhite glass how ever, and put the current front sheet on the base, leaving me with a nice clear and scratch free front sheet of optiwhite. :nilly:

The crack looks to be caused from impact. I wasn't home and had checked the tank before I had left. I am blaming the ginger cat as he has already broken 3 lids for it in the last 2 weeks. There is a chip on the base that looks to have been caused by an impact from above hitting the small lip that protrudes out where the front sheet meets the base, And the crack as spread through the base from there including the bottom bracing.
