BikBok
I've just updated my PC and had to say goodbye to my very useful but old Microsoft picture it! I'm now using Windows 7 and it comes with windows live photo gallery which has limited editing features and the red eye fix leaves a lot to be desired. What's out there that will give me an improvement over the windows live gallery? I want to be able to crop and put photos together as a collage, fix and adjust red eye, photo quality etc, and maybe add text to the pics sometimes. But I don't think I need to go the expense of a fully featured paid for program. My daughter said to have a look at gimp and picassa... any other recommendations. It needs to be free and compatible with windows 7.

BikBok
I had a quick look and decided that maybe picassa is a bit simpler and straight forward for my needs but I couldn't find out whether it was compatible for 64 bit win 7. then I also found this little bit of info: Two things to know The Picasa software provides a simple way to view, edit, and organize the photos on your computer. As you get started, there are two things you should always remember: 1. Picasa does not store the photos on your computer. When you open Picasa, it simply looks at the folders on your computer and displays the photos it finds. It displays the file types that you tell it to find, in the folders that you tell it to search. Your original photos are always preserved. 2. When using editing tools in Picasa, your original files are never touched. The photo edits you make are only viewable in Picasa until you decide to save your changes. Even then, Picasa creates a new version of the photo with your edits applied, leaving the original file totally preserved I'm confused.. 1. says it doesn't store photos on PC but 2. seems to contradict :" The photo edits you make are only viewable in Picasa until you decide to save your changes. " so can I actually saved edited photos to my own PC ? it's useless to me if I can't.
SamH
It's a program you download. It doesn't make copies of your photos when it uses them in Picassa, it simply reads them off your computer. When you edit and save a photo it saves a copy, it doesn't overwrite the original file. HTH.
#!CrunchBang
I couldn't find out whether it was compatible for 64 bit win 7. Win 7 64bit is good in that you can use both 32 and 64 bit software on it.
Phantom
Paint.Net might be worth a look at as well. I've installed it on heaps of PC's. Not sure if it does red eye reduction kind of thing though. Pro's are that it's small, quick and reasonably powerfull for all of the basics. the-obstacle
I've used Paint.NET for all of the above. I had to find a script for red eye removal but I'm sure I found one really easily. It's been a few months since I used it so off the top of my head can't remember how. Oh, hang on, here's a little helpful article on exactly how to do it. BikBok
thanks for all the replys. I will probably try a simple free software program first like Picasa and see how that goes.
ally07
I use Photopad Image Editor. Pretty sure it's a free download. Really easy to use and allows you to adjust all sorts of settings - think of it as simplified Photoshop. Stuff like brightness/ contrast/ warmth/ colour tone/ etc can all be tinkered with without all the confusion which comes with Photoshop. BikBok
well I don't like picasa much .. maybe I need to spend more time but so far it's frustrating me! and the collage is a pain in the but. It's either auto collage or you have to manually move pics around withotu accidentally rotating them and they have to precropped and Pre -edited BEFORE you add them to collage and in a seperate file. .. BLAH! I've also downloaded gimp, seems complicated but I'll have to get to know it better. :dunno: I miss my old ms picture it!! simple, straight fwd, logical and everything I needed. Where's the head against brick wall smiley?
