mucktar
Help! My Dad has an outdoor coldwater fish pond. Unfortunately he left the hose running at a reasonably high pressure for about 14 hours overnight and has woken to find all 9 of the fish dead. Dad is obviously gutted and we are just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for us so we can solve the mystery? We live in takapuna on the North Shore of Auckland, and are on town water supply. Thanking you in advance... Natalie.
spoon
hmm perhaps it could be temperature shock . the pond would have been pretty warm this time of year but tap water is quite cool all year round perhaps about 12 degs perhaps it chilled the fish
Zayne
where they in the pond of on the ground? i would think that would be fine, except wasting water
mucktar
hmm, thanks for that suggestion, sounds viable. Especially as the water was running for so long.

Caryl
Temperature shock Too much chlorine possible run-off from something sprayed on surrounding garden ...all come to mind. Otherwise I am surprised as fish would generally like a water change like that! I assume the fish were found floating in the pond? Any marks on them? Is it possible they floated out of the pond at some point, so died, then flowed back into the pond as the water level dropped again? In their last house my dad had to watch in heavy rains as the pond would overflow, the fish would swim out on the grass, then as the water level dropped they couldn't get back into the pond. He used to rake them in
mucktar
Thank you very much for your suggestions. The curious thing here is that the fish were all found on the BOTTOM of the pond, not floating. I don't think they left the pond. Thanks
Stella
I left the hose running full-bore into an INSIDE tank and hopped on a bus out of town.... I don't recommend it. Those fish all died within the hour. Anyway it is probably either chlorine or lack of oxygen, apparently tap water is often low in oxygen (though someone amy be able to confirm this for me?). May of course depend on if the supply comes from a lake, river or underground.
mucktar
Thanks Stella. I think I can conclude it is something to do with the hose water. Shall remain a mystery but I think we are on the right track. Poor fishies
smidey
in my in-laws pond his gold fish come to the surface gasping if he leaves the hose on too long. he hasn't lost any but he also hasn't left the hose on for that long. I think it is the oxygen that hurts them.
