tracytrout
Went to clean external cannister filter a couple of weeks ago and the impeller broke, wasn't that dirty so I just unplugged it and popped it in the garage  . Have replaced the impeller today and am now wondering if it's ok to just plug it back in or do I need to give it a good clean or replace some of the media?? :dunno:
antwan
Yea I think it would be best to give it a clean.
tracytrout
Thanks Antwan So I'm best to treat it like a brand new filter and just seed it with water from my tank?
Carlos & Siran
yup, you'll have to pull it all apart and rinse all the noddles and such in tank water, replace the filter wool with new(or even better, use the wool from and already active filter) all the bacteria will have died and will poison the tank now if you just start using it again. Keep a bucket nearby to vomit in when you open it.
ryanjury
Yeah it will be manky as, always best to empty and dry filters (leave the lid off) if you are going to not use them straight away.. You will need to clean it and wait for it to cycle or add some cycled media to kick start the cycle.
tracytrout
 Bucket for vomiting wasn't needed when i replaced the impeller today thank goodness so I must have cleaned it a couple of weeks ago.
