maoripho3nix
Im no expert here, but perhaps using a bit of NZ ingenuity, get some filter sponge, 3 x 99c buckets, drill holes in bottom of one, place filter sponge/wool in this bucket, pack it into bottom, whilst getting someone to hold this bucket above an empty 2nd bucket, pour the 3rd bucket full of your dirty water through the "filter bucket", viola....cleaner water for around $5?? Reusable in some way albeit.
puttputt
Tip it out, get some more when its clean, really not worth adding dirty water to tour tank.
Zayne
i filtered it through 2 sponges, never seen ocean water so clear

Zayne
i know i am hoping to get some shrimps or something, if i ran it through a uv filter that would clear it right? i have heard of people using it for their tropical marine, how would you filter this good enough to add to a tank like that? livingart
as has been said best to go and get some clean stuff have you tested for phosphates etc
Zayne
the water was clear until i stirred up the sand a bit, trying to put it in a bottle
Zev
I don't filter my NSW, if it is not clean, I don't take it home with me.

Zayne
the water was clear but when i was trying to put it in to the bottles the sand and crud off the bottom, got sucked in also
Zev
Can you collect it from somewhere where the water is deeper and there is no surf? By clean I mean no visible bits floating around in it and the water appears clear if you put it in a glass and hold it up to the light. If you just want to get rid of the sediment in the bottom, you can try decanting it a few times, letting it settle between each transfer, be careful not to disturb the stuff in the bottom. This means you get quite a bit of wastage because you have to leave quite a bit of water in the bottom of each container as you transfer it. Just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with it? Zayne
when i collected the water it was clear but as i scooped it up the crud off the bottom got lifted up into my bottle, im using it for brine shrimp, and was thinking of getting some small shrimps
Zev
If it is just for BBS the coffee filter trick will be fine.
alanmin4304
For Hatching Artemia I used to just let it settle in a 20 litre container then decant it off.
puttputt
 , probably best to state what your using it for, water changes in a reef tank is a little different from raising brine shrimp. hardly need to filter at all for bbs. WEKA
I collect 400L at a time and it does not matter if it is a bit dirty. I just let it sit for one or two days and it is clear as. That's what happens in nature, calm days settle out the sediment. Draw off water just above bottom of barrels - no problem.
suphew
You are alway best to collect clear water, sediment round NZ is most likely to be seaweed in the process of breaking down. Sitting in your water collection continers it's just down to keep breaking down and turn into Nitrate
Zayne
i filtered out the sediment first, so the water is now crystal clear
