Mirio
One of my discus is shivering and keeps pecking at the filter pipe. The other discus also pecks at the filter pipe. I don't think its spawning as they are only 8-10 months old. Any suggestions of what is happening?

Flosty
Yes that is spawning activity and yes the female can lay eggs at 8 months or earlier but the male will take a few more months to mature
k1w1y2k
These behaviours are definatly a sign of spawning. As they are still young fish, they will probibly eat the first few batches of eggs.
Mirio
how do i tell which one is male or female? what i've seen the smaller discus is the one shivering
DennisP
At that size its easiest (and with all discus, most reliable) to check the vents. Females vent should be fatter, and males should be quite thin and pointed. The breeding tube of the female, between the anus and anal fin, is broader and rounder than the male, and will have a blunt tip. The male, in turn, has a smaller, sharper breeding tube. Be aware that this is only evident during spawning, and should be closely observed. Mirio
well their vents haven't come out yet
DennisP
You'll have to wait until then, then. There are other methods, but none as as reliable.
phoenix44
you can also check using the fins but you'll need a non stunted fish for that. Apart from that females lay eggs, males don't
Luke*
yea sometimes they pair up before one year old.. should say "are my discus spawning??" as 'are' indicates plural, 'is' indicates singular.. as it's a pair = plural takes two to tango
