Omaria
So far I counted four and I separated the mother into the tank with the space in the bottom for the babies to fall through but wont the others in the tank not eat them? 2 other platy and 6 neons. What can I do to keep them alive? How many will she have? She may already have eaten some. I feel a bit mean to have her in that tiny floating tank by herself. SamH
If you don't have a container you can put the young in where others fish can't get to them and they can't escape, float an ice cream container full of tank water inside the main tank. You need to keep the fry away from all other fish or else they WILL be eaten. Good luck.
Omaria
Right I managed to get 3 and have placed them in a small plastic container (smaller than an icecream one) inside the tank, what do I feed them and how long do I keep them there safely. Would I need to change the water in the small container? I noticed some tiny snails on the bottom of the tank and they may have come in with the water I collected from our rainwater tank, is it safe to leave them in the big tank? Caryl
They will eat finely ground flake food. Just crush it in your fingers. You need to keep up water changes in the container as it will foul quickly.
Omaria
thanks I hope this works. , what about the snails in the big tank? they are very very tiny, if it wasnt for that fact I saw one move, I wouldnt have noticed.
Caryl
Leave the snails if you want. They will do no harm but may overbreed, depending on type, and take over the tank.

Thats what worries me, I dont fancy having to empty the tank and start all over again just now I have things going well. Tank cycled and fish looking healthy, not had one die on us in ages except for 1 last week which was a new one, may have been sick already. Caryl
Snails, in small numbers, can be good as they clean up leftovers on the substrate. The problem is when they get out of hand they can produce more waste than they eat
oneeyedfrog
I found snails almost impossible to remove completely. I have torn down tanks and cleaned everything only to have them reappear again a couple of weeks later. To keep them under control try a snail trap or put in a piece of courgette and in the morning pick it out - will have some snails on it. I also squash them against the side of the tank and the fish zoom over and eat them. I have a heavily planted tank with female guppies and platties- I just leave them and heaps of fry survive- too many in fact. I have just removed loads of plants to see if more get eaten. The guppy fry tend to hang around at the top esp in the floating plants and the platy fry hang around the bottom amongst the plant stems and under rocks and driftwood. If you give them enough cover some will survive- I had 2 platties and about 20 guppies a couple of months ago now at least 20 plus young platties and goodness knows how many guppies. I just crush the adults food too. Congratulations on your babies ! She will keep popping them out every few weeks for a while so if you don't manage to save any you will get more chances. Caryl
Platys are easy to sex. Here is a female... and here is a male... Note the difference in the fin under the body. It is rounded on the female and long and pointed on the male.
