DennisP
Am thinking of getting some really dark gravel for my 60cm tank, along with daltons aquatic mix. What colour looks best in your opinions? Have been using silica sand but its not really ideal for plants. Was thinking maybe that midnight stuff if I can find it, but if it is jet black it might be a bit overwhelming for a planted tank. Let me know what you guys prefer. the-obstacle
I'm about to setup a silica sand / black substrate tank with an acrylic strip to seperate them. I figure this way I get to have the nice white but have some black for planting in. I'll let you know how it goes as I'm filling the tank tonight if I can get to HFF in time... Joe
Silica sand is great for plants - what's wrong with it? You should see Jennifer's big tank. She uses Dalton's Propagating sand, and it looks fantastic. Dark gravel is still cool though. Get something fine if possible. FishBen, great idea. DennisP
Got some (what I think is) midnight gravel stuff. Very very dark, but I quite like it. Tomorrow I'm going out to buy daltons propogating or aquatic mix. Which ever is better. But I'm still not sure whether to go with a white "river" in the middle, or the whole thing black. phoenix44
Go for darker colours. Earthy shades of brown, black etc.
Allister_B
charcol substrate looks really good planted, a mix of silica and charcol would be kool
oO SKIPPY Oo
i use to have silica sand - but went to "east coast sand" from placemakers cause the silica is a bit bright and reflects a lot of light
Joe
Prferably I would go with the Dalton's. There's something about the midnight that I think isn't quite right. If you want, you can sift the Dalton's and it has lots of dark gravel in it, that is finer than pea gravel and looks lovely. It would tank ages, and you would go through quite a few bags. the-obstacle
I ended up going black grit / silica with a perspex divider in the tank. I'm in for a whole world of pain keeping this clean but it looks good - not necessarily the natural look but it looks nice.
