land_lubber
Thought I would start my old thread since I kind of took over the other one (sorry). Some of you may and may not know I just brought two female Apisto's that were sold to me as A.hongsloi but I'm not so sure they are and neither are other people by the sounds although I still have my fingers crossed they are, anyway I just got home from work and took a few more pics of the other female without the half black face and it looks like she has lost alot of the orange colour she has had which I'm guessing was from stress.I have also posted on another forum that is for Apisto's so am hoping to get an I.D. from there as well. So here they are I used the flash on my camera as well cause she was hiding in the shade of some plants.
phoenix44
Females of some apisto species can look drastically different. I recall having 2 very different types of female agasizzi as well.
Jennifer
In your pics I still see orange in the dorsal fin, however it is striping resembling the mature male hongsloi (but they usually have pink striping rather than orange). I don't see many spots on the anal fin or black markings on the pectoral fins but perhaps those markings aren't obvious in all specimens. I guess only time will tell. Again (just to keep the topic complete for comparison) here are a couple of pics of a breeding female I have. Her female offspring look like her. land_lubber
I meant looking like the female in the pic of the topic I posted in haha I thought she looked rather orange but may have been the lighting. Will give them a week for them to settled in and take some more pics and post them
Jennifer
Young pair, the male then nearly doubled in size and the female stayed the same size.
land_lubber
I see what you mean about the red on the top of the dorsel fin, now its just the waiting game I guess. I still hope they are honsloi's. I wonder if I put a male honsloi in there if you would be able to tell by the offspring.
phoenix44
Do it. they will colour up with a male, making the ID easier.

Jennifer
Sure no worries. Send me an email. If you know anyone going your way, that would save about $30 in courier costs.
land_lubber
Your email being the president one? I clicked the email button but my computer doesn't roll like that.
Jennifer
Yeah, that's the one. That's why I listed it in my sig. Apparently many people don't have their computer set up to use the button. :-?
land_lubber
Ok I got a reply from Mike Wise who is a Apistogramma guru and this is what he wrote: The lateral band is diagnostic for a hongsloi-complex fish, so they are one of the many forms/species of hongsloi-like fish. My bet is a domestic strain. These are usually a mix of forms. Very nice fish. The one with the black half face probably has nerve damage that prevents her from manipulating the melanophores on the face. Sometime this fixes itself, but usually does not. It won't affect her as a breeder (not a genetic problem nor contagious). Yay they are hongsloi females :bounce:

land_lubber
A bit of bad news. The female with half a black face face died this afternoon I noticed this morning she was getting a hard time from the male and was breathing pretty fast (looked like she was full of eggs) and the other female is in breeding colours so I shifted her to another tank. Just had a looknow and she is dead.
danval
Sad news.
land_lubber
Yeah it is. But on a bright note I think the other female may have laid I can't see if she has or not though cause its behind the flower pot in the back corner of the tank. I tried to use a mirrior but still couldn't see. She has done some digging though under the flower pot and she is looking pretty good in breeding colours. danval
Her behaviour should change dramatically if she is anything like the Agassizi. She will become very aggressive and will attack the male if he comes too close to her eggs. Fingers crossed she has spawned. Good luck
ryanjury
Usually a really good sign is the change in colour coupled with the fish hiding and going really skinny/aggressive..
ryanjury
Also forgot to say sorry for your loss But glad to hear that you may have a spawn already!
