Joe
Hi guyz, I've heard that Hygro. polysperma grows really short and compact under high light. Is this true? I'm planning to set up a 50x25x25cm nano, and I was thinking of putting Sunset polysperma in it. For lighting I was thinking of 2x T5 30cm 8watt PowerGlos, and a couple of power compacts - 1 at each end of the tank - since the PowerGlos don't span the whole length of the tank. alanmin4304
Keeping the water chemistry right in a high light tank that small will be a bit of a challenge.
Joe
What does high light do to the water chemistry that makes it hard to maintain? Is it true that H. polysperma grows really short in high light?
SamH
Go 60x30 if you can. I'm growing it under 2x 6500K Philips 23W CFLs with DIY CO2 through a diffuser up into the filter. Yes, it's growing slowly but really healthily. HTH
Joe
OK. Is 60x30x30 a nano size though? The whole point is that the tank is meant to be a nano.
SamH
If you were going to do a nano try copy some of the ADA small tank sizes (less than 40cm). Nano is not really a defined size, more of what someone thinks is a small tank. Someone once said that my 60cm cube would make a nice "nano"
Joe
I've sort of decided on something a little bigger - 52x26x31cm. I don't want to go too big, or then I'll only be allowed 2 tanks - a big high-tech one plus one smaller one. If I stick to something smaller, I'll be allowed 2 nanos plus the big tank. The ADA ones are really cool sizes, but for my first nano I want something bigger, and I'll work my way down as I gain more knowledge and experiecne in keeping nano aquariums. Someone once said that my 60cm cube would make a nice "nano" That's a 200 liter tank!!! Is it true that H. polysperma grows really short under high light? Can somebody give me an answer to this? SamH
Can somebody give me an answer to this? Yes, it's growing slowly but really healthily. That's a 200 liter tank!!! Yes, that's my point. Nano is a matter of opinion.

Joe
Would riccia and glosso grow well under the same lighting levels that you're growing the polysperma? I'm intending to put them in the same tank.
alanmin4304
My point was that there is no point in having high light unless you have all the requirements for rapid growth. H. polysperma will go nuts in a high light aqarium which has sufficient nutrient as well. Glosso needs lots of light and riccia will block the light. Joe
Glosso needs lots of light and riccia will block the light. No it won't, because I forgot to mention its going to be tied to the substrate
phoenix44
It can grow flat and carpet in my tank. So yeah, you need high light.
Joe
So do you think it would look good in a 52x27x32cm nano (decided I want it a bit bigger since it's my first time)? I'll have some glosso, and maybe Lilaeopsis. I'm not sure about riccia anymore. I might use that in the smaller nano I plan to set up after this one. What lighting do you think will be good? I was thinking, since there's going to be glosso, 3x 8watt 30cm T5 PowerGlo, and 2x 20cm Power compact (for the sides). Nutient rich substrate plus DIY CO2 too. phoenix44
No, I personally don't think it would look good. Looks better in larger tanks.
Joe
OK. I'll just try it, and if I don't like it then I'll swap it for something else
