phoenix44
Yeah. I never cleaned the tank because I knew the micro organisms on the plants and gravel were going to do wonders for the few babies that I had. I still recommend liquifry. It's cheap and by my reasoning it was specifically made for baby fish so it must have something in it that enhances growth and builds the immune system or something like that. At the stage your fry are at, at the moment I was feeding decap BS and liquifry as well. Then i increased the amount of BS until I didn't need the liquifry any more. Today the babies I have are 9 weeks old, and I have already taken out the male I wish to keep and a female who is bright yellow and is ready to breed. Won't breed her yet though because she is only about 3cm long. From a batch of 10-11; I got 2 females, and now one of those females is developing distinctly male characteristics  which is not good because now im left with all but one female; maybe the second female will make her mind up if i remove the yellow alpha female. How many do you have now? The colours of the baby males are absolutely amazing; just like their dad, which is why I am holding on to them for so long. Didn't want to sell washed out looking babies. Hopefully the breeding is done right from the start and your batch size looks at least three times more promising than mine! I've lost my original pair too; so that's 2 pairs down and a few babies to show for it.
danval
Thanks for that P44. I have stopped feeding them liquifry and have been feeding them decap b/s, bloodworm forced through a very fine sieve and baby mosquito larvae when I manage to get a raft from the bucket outside. The size of the fry ranges from approx 1cm to 2cm and at a guess I think I have about 30, but it is hard to tell in my tank as there is alot of leaf litter on the bottom and unfortunately they don't all come out at the same time. :-? Cheers. Dan.
Bilbo
Thanks for your positive response Bilbo. You're welcome and remember me when they are big enough to sell Liquifry is pretty easy to make. I stole this recipe but its almost the same as I made I think. 1 tablespoon powdered whole egg 1/2 tablespoon of live yeast. (rehydrated bakers yeast will do) 1/2 tablespoon spoon of chick-pea flour. Mix with cool boiled tap water till its a smooth thin paste about the consistency of yoghurt. Will keep for about a month in the fridge. I prefer to culture paramecium now though. Won’t spoil in your tank, wont use up the oxygen, better food for your fry and they move around so the hunting instinct takes over and they eat more. The same reason we recommend using live freshly hatched brine shrimp, fish will stuff themselves because they cant help chasing and eating something that is dancing in front of their noses. danval
Cheers Bilbo. I will give that a go. I do have half a dozen jars of green water which i incorporate in their feeding. I also feed Microworms and am guilty of over feeding various foods but thankfully have a large population of small snails in the tank which seem to clean up leftovers . And hopefully I can get a few to saleable size, I will definitely be offering first pick to those of you have been very helpful in getting me this far. danval
Have had one of my fry turn very pale and it looks as if it has had it. No idea why as the rest look A ok. Have done a partial water change earlier on and have been feeding blowfly eggs to them!, which they seem to relish. Any ideas?
Bilbo
I have never tried fly eggs but I cant think of any good reason why not. What a great idea, would be even better if you didnt have to have a blowfly to get them. How big are the fry now?
danval
They are all around 2cm and are a lot more active, actively seeking out food and coming up at feeding time rather than hiding in the leaves. Even though they are not much bigger in length they seem to increased in bulk size. I still have no idea what happened to the sick fry which had turned almost white. Initially I thought it was dead and went to get it out but it took off, and the other fry seemed to chase it.
ryanjury
It could have just been having a stressed out day or just a random sick/dead one sometimes these things happen and you can't win them all Haven't tried the fly maggots either but would be careful feeding too many of them if they are quite big compared to the fish. Either way it sounds like you are doing things right if they are still there and growing so good work!
danval
Yeah hopefully a random sick one as looking at them today they all look good. And it's not the maggots but the eggs that i have been feeding them so are a perfect size for the fry at present

danval
Really? I think I must have alot of boys then.... What do the girls look like at this size because I can't tell the difference! Maybe all boys
phoenix44
I would start separating them at this age. Any thing with a gill plate like that is a male. They will soon develop more colour and attitude!
danval
When you say to seperate, do you mean males from females? And for what reason? Thanks.
phoenix44
Mainly aggression. I would hate for you to have sudden losses like I had. Or put them all in a larger tank.
danval
Cool. Thanks for you advice P44. How's the Lancelota Whiptail spawn going?
phoenix44
was about to update that. All the embryos died today I think. couple of ok ones, but i think ill let the parents do the care taking next time. I think the eggs might be light sensitive. danval
Am sorry to hear. Like you say, maybe Adults can do a good job. Good luck with your next spawn. Dan.
ryanjury
I would start separating them at this age. Any thing with a gill plate like that is a male. They will soon develop more colour and attitude! With the number that you have and the size tank I wouldn't be stressing too much about separating them at the moment the tank is quite big and you have a large number of them to spread aggression out as well. Phoenix was the gill plate 100% with your spawn? That is not a method that I have managed to find with sexing young agassizi..
phoenix44
yep 100% accurate. The females will never have that colour. I think my female has spawned tonight again
the-obstacle
I just watched my bigger male eat a native shrimp who was trying to steal his bloodworm. I wondered where they were going and why he was growing so much faster than the other.
danval
Going by the gill plate method, i'm struggling to see any females!
Sunbird73
FYI - went to HFF albany today and they had agassizi for $28 - only males tho that I could see. tho they thought there might be one female in there. But vy nice looking males some of them.
danval
Must have dropped their prices from last week.. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=48741
phoenix44
For imports, that price is normal; but seeing as they also buy off breeders the males could be off a breeder.
