I am thinking of upgrading my 90cm tank to a 180cm tank.

Will the 1.8m tank need bracing?

What height and depth should i have for a tank with a silver aro and tiger oscars...ect.

Once you get a tank that is 90cm i call it big then.....no more room for fish :x

so i need to upgrade YAY :D

i thought they are the same :D

morning can strike at any time!

depends on the thickness of the glass doesn't it???

yes it does, if the glass is thick enough & therefore strong enough it doesn't need bracing. In saying that i do not know what thickness will be enough to not have bracing & it will also depend on the height of the panel as well.

Unless you're building it yourself just let the tank maker worry about the bracing etc, if you use someone experienced like Greg/Tanks2u or Hollywood then you'll be right, they've both built countless tanks that big or larger and know what they're doing.

As for the silver aro, general consensus is 8x3x2' is the bare minimum to keep one happy for life, a 6x2x2' will be a good grow out for around two years, but will need to be upgraded to something longer and wider after that.

I'd go for 60cm wide, unless you have a specific reason for only going 50cm, I guess it depends what you want to keep. IMO wide tanks look much better than tall ones, and gives you a better perception of depth. And its better for almost every kind of fish!

You can get it made to what ever you like, but a bigger footprint is better, and IMO a tank that is wider than it is tall looks better. The last three tanks I've bought have been 150x70x60, 180x75x60 and 240x98x62, each time I have gone wider in relation to the height and each time I've liked it more!

and cheap....not

Actually I got lucky with the tank, Greg just happened to have a piece of tinted 12mm glass 2400x977, so the price was a lot less than it could have been. Originally I had asked for a price for 900 wide, but then asked how big the sheet of glass was and said just make it that wide. It only just fitted in his van!!

But yeah, the tank is about the cheapest part, then there's the stand, sump, pump, heaters, and all the other little bits. I've spent about $300 on bio media (noodles and bio balls), over $80 on plumbing, $90 for a sheet of 17mm treated ply, it soon adds up!! Still haven't decided about lighting, will probably go for four 4' T5 tubes in a custom hood, more $$$$. I had thought about going for a larger DIY tank out of ply but none of those bits can be done any cheaper, I'd only save money on the tank itself.

No. 60 wide, 50 high.

I agree with you Super03.gif

60 wide is better for the depth feeling (the perspective).

180 x 60w --> :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Considering the more the glass is thick, the more expensive it is.

50 high needs only 10mm thick

60 high needs 12mm

(with bracing)
