caroldaisy3
I am trying to decide between getting a severum or discus to go with my neon tetras and cardinals plus my six golden barbs. Will my neons and/or cardinals get eaten by either a severum or discus can anyone tell me please.
SamH
Discus are less destructive than sevs. I'd go with the discus, far less likely to eat the tetras but will require a higher temperature. HTH
Ira
I am trying to decide between getting a severum or discus to go with my neon tetras and cardinals plus my six golden barbs. Severums definitely. Much MUCH hardier fish. Discus are like the poodle being carried around in a handbag of the cichlid world. Will my neons and/or cardinals get eaten by either a severum or discus Probably yes, possibly no. If they're full grown they're less likely to be eaten, but in general if it fits in another fish's mouth then it's food.

HTH Severums are only destructive if you're a plant. Also, BTW, this definitely do NOT belong in the coldwater forum.
phoenix44
how big is your tank?
caroldaisy3
Thanks for that. Someone said the tetras could not take the higher temperatures but the cardinals could. Do you know anything about that?
Zayne
neons are fine in higher temps i would go with discus as i have 3 full grown Severums and anything tetra sized is DINNER they ate my some of my baby electric yellows
phoenix44
Neons are not fine in the higher temps. At 29-30 degrees you will be buying them every couple of months. How big is the tank?
caroldaisy3
Tank is 120 litres.
phoenix44
In that case you probably don't want 2 severums in there. You could get 1 discus, but get rid of the barbs.

ryanjury
Might be ok for 1 sev but I would say they will eat neons, my advice to you if you wanted fish with character would be to go into the dwarfs until you have a big enough tank for the bigger guys. Something like bolivian rams are hardy easy to keep and easily available, even kribs etc are very colourful and nice..
phoenix44
yeah. prob too small for 1 discus too. definitely not for a fully grown one.
caroldaisy3
If I kept my neons and golden barbs..what colourful fish would be best to put with them.h
Zayne
ive had neons with discus (29 degrees) for over a year
Simian
I successfully kept Cardinals with Sev's for 6 months, then one weekend away I lost 20+ cardinals. Sevs & Cardinals do not work!
David R
Full grown (like a good solid 20cm) severums are a massive fish, 120L is nowhere near big enough. IMO anything smaller than about 4x2x2' is too small.
Zayne
my sevs are like 15cm and are nasty
Ira
my sevs are like 15cm and are nasty None of my severums have ever been nasty.
oO SKIPPY Oo
i have 1 nasty one and a couple of really placid ones. the nasty one use to be a really shy fish when i first found it and rescued it - then i put it with mine and it is now the boss of the tank
malevolentsparkle
bolivian or butterfly rams would be my bet beautiful fish! and small and peacefull: bolivian ram: butterfly ram:

Ira
bolivian or butterfly rams would be my bet beautiful fish! and small and peacefull: bolivian ram: butterfly ram: They work well with severums. Mine bullied the severums. I could swear I saw a confused look on the severum's face when this 1" fish would try chasing away an 8" fish that probably outweighs him by about 800 times. fishplants
I would go for a couple of Discus. 120l is plenty big enough for 2 full grown discus, that is 60l per fish. Most people recommend 10gal per adult which is about 40l per fish - Google it.
David R
Define "nasty". They can be picky, and harass other fish [and each other], but then again what cichlid doesnt, however no severum will be nasty in comparison to something like a female festae with her period.....
