cichlid7
I am going to be building a new stand for at least 8 600 x 300 x 300mm Tanks. 4 per shelf as per diagram below, with the top shelf as extra room for smaller tanks if needed at a later date. I am looking to build it with 4x2 (100x50) hopefully with uprights at each end only, but don't know if it will be strong enough. There will be approximately 250KG on each shelf. I plan to have the front and back 4x2 of each shelf inset into the uprights sitting 4" high 2" deep with 12-20mm plywood/MDF board flat across the top for extra support . The total length of the stand would be 2540mm. Would this hold the weight??
livingart
you may get some bowing in the 2.4m lengths may also be aggravated over time with moisture from the tanks
diver21
ild just put 2 uprights in the middle so the shelves have 2 tanks between each upright
Carlos & Siran
2500mm is a long way really, with 4x2s it'd be a bit iffy. I'd also be concerned about the whole shebang just slewing sideways. I'd put a up-right all the way to the floor between each tank and some sort of cross bracing, corner braces perhaps. I always like to over-build when doing something like this, you can never be too careful really.
diver21
have you seen this page? http://www.sandiegotropicalfish.com/eBu ... 7_July.htm very good page about building this sort of thing. in there it recommends only having 2-3 2foot tanks between each upright
cichlid7
you may get some bowing in the 2.4m lengths Thats what i was worried about. I had a plan B but preferred the look of plan A So i guess i will go with plan B PLAN B
David R
Plan B looks better. IMO going for 4 1200x30x30 tanks with a divider in the middle would be a better option than the two tanks, less likely to sag in the middle.
ryanjury
Yep plan B is a better option, if you wanted to fit even more tanks in why not just throw in a curve ball in there and run 8 2fts end on on each shelf
