henward
can i get a indication on your feeding regime? i feed mine 4 times a day through out the day with one bigger feed at night. reason is that i use auto feeder 3 times during the day, and i feed manually at night. i find theyd otn come up to the tank AS much anymore. probably cos they are not hungry. butin saying that, this is what i read how to feed. nwo i am told, adults can be fed once or twice a day. babies to juvies can be fed multiple times a day. any feedback? i have 1x small, 2x juvie, 2x sub adult and 9 adults. theya re all in the 1200Litre tank. so i cant really discriminate on the feed. they seem fat and happy and very thick. some are growing bigger. except for panag eruption and leopard who seems to have full vivid colours at a small medium size, which i take it wont grow much bigger:(
Nymox
Im feeding mine about 10 times a day, Im also doing a 10% WC on them about half an hour after. Mine are just 6 months old so spending alot of time on them to make sure they reach their maximum potential size. I just feed small amounts often of things like blood worms, ground ox heart and discus tucker, but I generally leave some colourbits on the bottom of the tank at all times, they just pick at that every so often. There is feeder guppy fry in there too they can eat, which I think they might be. I have the time to keep and eye on them, keep them clean, its paying off too. Your situation is a little different so I think what your doing is fine, maybe get 2 auto feeders and have them working together to get smaller amounts of food out more often. henward
i have 14 and they eat lots. i think its ok, its the principle of multi feeds a day i guess. adults too benefit from the multi feeds?
phoenix44
I have 3 discus now, down from the 7 I had. I thinned down numbers. I feed them heaps! pretty much not less than 6 times a day. I give them that high protein miracle stuff and colourbits, with an occasional sprinkle of JBL discus food. I'm keen to try out hikari as mine eat the aro pellets at the moment too. I soak the food in water and then feed it to them until their bellies are nice and round. then i feed them a little more, and repeat throughout the day. Ever since I started feeding that high protein food I have not fed them any discus tucker / beef heart and liver tucker. Occasionally I give them prawn when the hypans get it and they eat that too. A varied diet is essential so give any fish a wide range of foods for it to be happy.
henward
what high protein miracle stuff please share:D im interseted. sinking? im only keen on sinking food for discus cos of over flow. if youc ould let me know brand or where to get high protein stuff or is it sinking? phoenix44
its a pain to feed. it does not sink. I put it in a syringe, add water - compress it, then cover the nozzle and pull the pump down and all the air from inside the pellets come out. then i inject it into the tank. the pellets are very small. 60% protein I think, but im not so sure why you are fixated on protein  There are other food groups out there that are vital as well. PM casserole, not sure if he has any left.
Nymox
I aggree with P44, dont be so worried about protien so much. IMO, things like colour bits may have all the nutrition they need but just like we find with processed foods for humans, in more artificial form its harder for our body to abosrb. I mix up blood worms, brine shrimp, spirilina, daphnia, ox heart and meal worm. Plenty of nutrients in that and even some green in the spirilina and daphnia belly. Fresh water shrimp are good too, feed them on algae and plant matter crush them up and add to the mix. I dont look for % of protiens and calcium and all that drama, I just try to make sure their diet is as close to a natural food source as I can. I couldnt be further from an expert or anything like that so dont take me as discus feeding law by any means lol. So far though Im having great success. Aquila
It's the same stuff I posted the information about in one of your threads ages ago. what high protein miracle stuff please share:D im interseted. sinking? im only keen on sinking food for discus cos of over flow. if youc ould let me know brand or where to get high protein stuff or is it sinking? Aquila
Yup, this stuff is really good. Protein is needed for muscle development and babies are bulking up nicely. This food would be more important for your young and juvi ones (60%), less so for the adults who are done growing and only need some protein (40%) for muscle and stuff. But other than protein, it also has the right portions of vitamins and lipids. I also mix the diet for my discus with brine shrimp, blood worms, and live foods but I use this stuff as the staple. Proximate analysis: *Protein 60% *Lipids 18% Ash 15% Moisture 8% Vitamin C 1,000 ppm Vitamin E 400 ppm *Astaxanthin, 500 ppm ( promotes growth )
henward
my discus eat discus bio gold 3 times during the day. also auto feeder puts floating c gold for the pink tail chalceus, whcih some of them eat. im after sinking stuff due to current of water, i prefer to have them feed centre, front of the tank, for viewing:D i was thinking of getting discus tucker - i heard that discus tucker can contribute to bloat? raw meat food i mean. i used to feed it in the past and had oen bloat, but some attribute that to raw meaty food like discus tucker type stuff. any thoughts? i was thinking of feeding discus tucker every other day as well as its pellets. they love fresh meaty stuff i know. Aquila
This 'super food' sinks as well. I dip my finger into the food so it sticks and then put it under the water. It will swirls around in the water current where the discus and ram chase it and then it settles on the bottom where they finish it off Some of it floats at the top for a while but eventually sinks. I don't bother pre-soaking it because it doesn't really expand at all like the colourbits.
henward
oh ok. so itts like colour bits, some float, bout 10% what % if you just put a tsp in the water, what % you say would sink immediately, and what % would float then sink?
Aquila
I would estimate that abotu 10% float with eventual sinkage But you have to put them INTO the water, not just ontop of the water. 90% will swirl around i nthe current and then settle on the bottom.
