Scottie841
No problem, I'll leave the pics for people like you who make such great contributions to this forum. Do you actually keep fish? I don't recall ever seeing you posting pic of them. Sweet that solves that problem for you then Yes I do keep fish and yes I have put up pictures in the past
SamH
Get in the real world and realise not everyone can access (or afford) broadband. I agree 100%, I know some people who are grateful they even have a dial up connection and and old PC, just so they can do their homework. Do you actually keep fish? I don't recall ever seeing you posting pic of them. Some of the worlds greatest fish keepers never show a single fish, doesn't mean the don't have them. Man, I love being schooled by kids who have only been here 5 minutes. Have fun talking about how many tanks your mum will let you keep in your bedroom. Its not really surprising why so many of the "greatest fish keepers" don't bother posting.
Scottie841
Here you go David. (I even made sure it is the right size) p.s. Not in my bedroom and my mother can’t limit how many tanks I have as I have not lived at home in over 10 years
Aquila
I think this is a bit out of line. I don't know what your problem is with everyone but you need to get your additude in check and contribute something other than hostility. David R
but you need to get your additude in check and contribute something other than hostility. Actually I don't NEED to contribute anything, I choose to spend my free time posting here, and if I choose not to then its going to be the forum missing out, not me. TBH as an advanced fishkeeper this forum offers me very little, there isn't much motivation for me to post here other than to try and support the local scene and help people out. Its easier for me just to post the pics on MFK and have intelligent discussions with people who have similar interests, of which there are very few here. There are a lot of people who could contribute all sorts of interesting stuff but don't, I was waiting for a friend to post pics in the 'NZ Aro Community' thread but he simply said he couldn't be bothered. In the 7 years I've been here it seems like the membership has become rather bottom-heavy, with many experienced hobbyists with interesting fish choosing to post elsewhere or not at all. I guess I should stop trying to buck the trend....
Aquila
And what did this forum do to you to deserve your arrogance? There are numerous members on here whom I'm sure contribute more than they get in return advise-wise, yet they don't walk around with their chests puffed out all the time. smidey
David, i agree with the base of what you are saying but i think your going about it the wrong way in this thread. the natural progression for everyone is to start as a newbie asking what fish go with what & what filter to put on our small tank. then we get experience & move up the ladder & try to help the newbies. after several years we have read every thread & plateau while the newbies still come. i have found experienced keepers that were around when i was a newbie are no longer here & some of them simply use it to sell fish & don't contribute at all. it's the few experienced keepers that stick around to keep helping newbies that keep it running but most "fall off the top" as the newbies enter at the bottom. thats just how it is & experienced keepers will always be offered advice by less experienced people & that will never change. an open mind & a sense of humor will be required & tested. i am sticking around for when trophs are being bought by newbies, then i shall be useful & in the meantime i am trying different things so i understand more than what is currently in books & on forums
David R
Fair point Smidey, I guess I'm just questioning why I feel inclined to want to share pics and knowledge here, I should probably just listen to the half of me that says "don't bother". And what did this forum do to you to deserve your arrogance? There are numerous members on here whom I'm sure contribute more than they get in return advise-wise, yet they don't walk around with their chests puffed out all the time. If that how I come across [other than in the past few posts in this thread] then I'm genuinely sorry, its not intended. People have a tendency to act tough on the internet and I guess I should have just ignored sams post instead of dragging the thread off-topic, although why he chose this thread to make a song and dance about it instead of this thread in the fishroom forum I'm not sure. My point still remains, and its hard to make without sounding arrogant. If this forum would rather cater to people still using dial-up than people who want to post big pictures then thats fine, but its membership is going to reflect that. Its fairly typical of the kiwi tall poppy chopping syndrome. 5 mins? How about three years? Its fairly typical of the kiwi tall poppy chopping syndrome. I would not say it is "tall poppy" it is more understanding other people and having a bit of consideration for others that don’t have the same ability as you do. Limiting picture sizes does not disadvantage you as much as not limiting them would disadvantage some people. The size limit is in there to be fair on people that don’t have the latest toys. Try to think of someone other than yourself and have a bit of compassion for those that want to be part of the group but would not be able to if you had it set up to best suit yourself
Scottie841
Back on topic We have 4 of them in a 6 foot tank and they come out as soon as you turn the tank lights off. About half an hour before we go to bed we turn the room light on and the tank light off to it is not just light or dark for the fish. David R
Limiting picture sizes does not disadvantage you as much as not limiting them would disadvantage some people. I guess you haven't been here long enough to remember when there wasn't actually a limit on the dimensions of pictures that could be posted. When I joined (and for years after that) people posted pics of all shapes and sizes and almost everyone was on dial-up. I certainly don't recall anyone ever complaining about pic-heavy threads. I'm not even sure why the size limit was implemented, preventative measure perhaps.... Oh right, because everyone joins this forum the second they start keeping fish. I joined once I bought some fish off ADodge and she asked me if I was a member here, that was when I was well into fish keeping. Reading comprehension fail. I said "been here 5 minutes" not keeping fish 5 minutes. I'd been keeping fish for about 6 years before joining this site, not that it really matters. Some of the worlds greatest fish keepers never show a single fish, doesn't mean the don't have them. I'm not really sure what your point was, but you're really just reiterating what I'm trying to say. Most of the people I know [in real life] who are serious about keeping fish don't bother actively contributing to internet forums. Do we want more people not contributing or less? phoenix44
I really don't understand why you have to keep complaining about the small images on this site every time you post a pic. You could have expressed your opinion in the fishroom website thread too. I too was unhappy when the picture size was limited when we transferred to the new forum a couple of years ago, but I can see why it was done. 640.480 isn't too bad and when i need to link to a higher definition image, i just use the img thumb code. I too would rather have the image sizes larger.. I've got a 24" monitor that dwarves the pictures. Man, I love being schooled by kids who have only been here 5 minutes. Have fun talking about how many tanks your mum will let you keep in your bedroom. Its not really surprising why so many of the "greatest fish keepers" don't bother posting. I hope this doesn't reflect the way you were spoken to when you first started keeping fish. we all had to start somewhere. ____ Clown loaches will come out and play if they feel secure in their environment. This could either be safety in numbers as they are a schooling fish or by having a well planted or shaded aquarium.
David R
You could have expressed your opinion in the fishroom website thread too. Been there done that; viewtopic.php?f=8&t=35853 Clown loaches will come out and play if they feel secure in their environment. This could either be safety in numbers as they are a schooling fish or by having a well planted or shaded aquarium. IMO its certainly safety in numbers. My tanks don't have a huge amount of cover in them, and large clowns will often destroy plants so they aren't really the answer. I've found the more you have the more active they are. Keeping them in groups of less than 10 is a waste IMO, its like keeping 4 cardinal tetras and wondering why they don't school...
Caryl
"try and support the local scene and help people out" you say. Exactly! The problem will resolve itself soon when dial-up will no longer be available - and that time is coming soon. Why are you all getting upset by one person complaining about image size restrictions? If he wishes to moan about it every time he adds a link to his large pics elsewhere then let him do so. Just ignore it and click on the link if you wish. In the old days, when I had dial up, I didn't look at any pics as they took too long to load.
mac
Who ever told you that is yanking your chain. 12" is generally accepted as the maximum size. There are a few claims of bigger wild caught ones but I'm yet to see a pic with anything showing scale. Anything even close to 12" in aquaria is massive, my largest is only about 7-8". And for starters I know fish keeping very well, and many many people keeping fish out of NZ and the large groups in Germany ect. So when saying yanking my chain think again. Then you have not been searching the internet about clowns much. There are many pics out there of them bigger. Just search, and look for them, most are in forums were old farts show em off. mac
No I can't because some sites don't exist, and others would take me for ever and ever going through pics on forums. Try AC and Aqua hobby and Loaches on line and monster fish. some links of a old threads I have saved. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forum ... hp?t=40944 http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/to ... ever-seen/ http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php ... 41bf0d6b35 http://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=2115 I you look through pages of pages of forum chat you find them. AC had a thread about 3 years ago. But to find it would take me for ever, don't remember the author or what it was called. There is another site, but I can't find the name and none of it is in English but dutch. And the link was from a OZ friend.
