Jennifer
First thing to consider is toxicity that could be causing inflammation. Did they suddenly start this behaviour or has it been building up over time? What is the pH? Has the pH changed from the expected normal? Done any recent water changes or added anything? Second thing to consider is skin parasites but I wouldn't go there just yet unless you rule out the above.

ryanjury
Sometimes the substrate can irritate africans gills causing them discomfort as they dig in it alot. Have you looked really closely to make sure they don't have whitespot or anything like that?
smidey
i have had various africans that did that but they were all juvies at the time, i put it down to temprement rather than anything to worry about.
Matto
they look fine apart from the scrapping and it wont be from digging as they are little.
