Could I keep an oscar in an aquaone 850 (165 litres)?

A single cichlid?
1 or 2

Single usually means 1

The biggest cichlid I'd put in an AquaOne850 would be a firemouth but even that's pushing it. A pair or harem of dwarf cichlids might be nice?

I think oscars need 4'x2'x2' minimum.

A Blood Red Parrot cichlid? Mid sized tetras, danios, angelfish, and catfish are all possible tank mates.

EDIT- Just read your other post and see you are moving away from a community tank, ignore this suggestion.

The general idea of housing a singular cichlid is to have a 'wet pet', and the only cichlids that fit that category just happen to grow 12''+

Agreed. Maybe go for a smaller fish with a big personality? Like a Betta?

I have a pair in a 170L 4ft at the moment, they are pretty small and it is just a temporary fish sitting home for them while their owners were away I certainly wouldn't recommend putting them in anything smaller, unless you were planning (and able to) upgrade to a bigger tank of course.
