Hi all. I started out with a small little 60 litre hexagon and have upgraded in September too this

http://www.masterpet.com/australia/prod ... m_no=EG515

measurements are not in there so I will give them for those of you who are not familiar with the tank

Length 90cm

Side 36cm

Max width at the top in the centre 42cm

water depth 50cm

I am a beginner in the aquarium hobby and love it severely :P I had a dream of fancy pleco's since I go absolutely mad for pleco's but that dream was shattered when a very helpful employee at HFF said that those guys really need their space.

So then Hubby and me had a walkabout in the store and saw glass catfish, which you guys so kindly said would be fine  and I currently have five danio's, three swordtails and Three bristlenoses. What can you guys suggest to make my tank more excitening, even in decorations, I will link you to a pic of my tank as it is now. I will link you to photobucket cause its a bigger pic than if I had to resize it to put an image of it here.

Thanks in advance guys, really appreciate all your help :)

If you put rocks in there you'll be suprised how much better it is. If I get a chance I'll post a pic of my tank. It's a really simple design but in my opinion it would look nothing without rocks. Also some sort of cory or loach would make it look more interesting. You could also get some real plants and put some black gravel in there.

:hail::D Awesome! You are well on your way. 8)

If it were my tank, I would swap out the substrate (gravel) for something darker - this will make the fish colour up a lot more. I would also get a larger, more dynamic piece of wood, or an additional large piece of wood. It is amazing how much that can create interest in a tank and the fish will like the shelter it provides. I would then attempt to get a bunch of basic live plants - the more the better. Cabomba is easy, as is java fern (which attaches to the wood). To start with, fertilise every day with Flourish Comprehensive (about 1ml per 40L of water - this will keep the plants growing fast and thus help to prevent algae).

If you get more of the same type of danios they will look great and create a lot of interest with their flashy movement. One or two larger fish also make the tank interesting - perhaps a couple of large rainbows (they are peaceful) or dwarf cichlids (can be a bit more challenging).

Just those changes alone will make such a difference, you will be amazed. :D

Keep us updated about what you choose - it will be great to see how your tank develops.

The bigger ones do, but there's no reason you couldn't keep one or a few smaller ones. Hypancistrus like chocolate zebras (L270) or king tigers (L066), starlight ancistrus flash pleco L204, pretty pekoltia, clowns, are all fairly readily available and all stay under ~15cm IIRC, so should be fine in that tank. Could probably keep 2-3 in a tank that size if you provide them wil plenty of spots to hide.

Thanks for all the advice

I spoke to my hubby and we will get the darker gravel, I will get an additional piece of driftwood and get some nice Stone decorations. I am not yet ready to use life plants and I think my big male bristlenose will be very upset if I took his plastic kelp plant away  He loves it to bits, won't even get off If I shift it around the tank while gravel vaccing :P I will do all this over time, but once completed I will show you guys the final result on this thread. Thanks once again for all your valued advice
