livingart
pretty pretty where have you been fishing? looks almost like a juvenile black angel fish haven't seen one that small though so don't lnow if they start with the red patch at around 2 inches they are yellow with blue dots in lines sort of on the body
puttputt
they are only 6-10mm long and stunning, looked at black angel, doesn't seem right, theyhave green spots when young? - although that damsel/chromis type body shape is right. Oh, Tauranga Bay. Got some really nice stock, and tank has just got over the seemingly endless algae cycles, and looks really good now. Cricketman
Marine biologist says: Probably a VERY young black angel. The yellow and purple seems to suggest at least. would be interesting to see how they develop. The young black angel pictures you usually see are free-swimming juveniles seen by divers. Black angels lay in shallow weedy areas, so maybe you have hit upon a nursery?
puttputt
Thanks for that guys, i think it is a very small black angel, so will be fun watching them grow. they are happy and eating well (flakes), although being angels i wonder how long before the decide they are too close to each other, very territorial!!! Cricketman
Won't get territorial for a long while yet I think... They only get really territorial when they become all-black and begin looking for mates. I've seen groups of morphing juveniles(Black, shaping up, but still had spots of blue/yellow) living together in caves with slender roughys and big-eyes. livingart
low tide, same method, very shallow water stomach touching the bottom and back almost out of the water 2 nets one big one small go slowly and watch around the base of rocks or weed no big fish in very shallow water to eat little fish, its their safe zone red and painted moki are found there only introduce them to tank all at once don't try to add one to an existing group they will kill it

livingart
yes 20 plus years ago made my own, nothing available at the time good for getting those interesting blennies out of the crevices in the rocks also used an inner tube with a fine net tied inside it to tow behind me saved going back to unload a catch plastic bags punched full of fine holes and a hoop in the open end propped between rocks then pulverising a kina etc inside it worked well to catch things as well
